Il Ngwesi Lodge
Reviewed October 16, 2011

Il Ngwesi is THE place for an immersive Maasai hosted stay in Kenya. Located in a beautiful remote area, this eco-friendly lodge perfectly blends nature and culture leaving the guest with a unique experience. Hosted by Il Ngwesi Maasai community members, guests leave with an understanding and appreciation for the tribe's rich history and in awe of the outstanding customer service they receive. Having visited multiple times, Il Ngwesi amazes me as it just keeps getting better - a must see for those interested in Maasai culture and/or a true respite surrounded by nature!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a "star bed" for a little something extra special!

It doesn't get better. The only Maasai owned and run spot in Kenya, you are on a hill with an open banda overlooking the expansive game park that is all yours. No other tourists. The staff is amazing. On a quick walk, we ran into giraffes, elephants, Zebra, Worthogs, a gazillion gazelles... We also had a great evening with the local Maasai community.

Can't recommend this place enough! One of the best nights of sleep in my life!

Room Tip: Rooms 1 & 5 allow you to sleep under the stars.

ll Ngwesi lodge- This has to be one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed in my life, the surroundings, the room, the food, the staff were all first class. I am so very pleased that we had the opportunity to experience the lodge. I was left totally speechless when we arrived. I feel this is a beneficial project and great for the local community (Masai tribe). I would not hesitate to recommend and visit this place again sometime in the future.

When you dream of Kenya, you dream of somewhere like Il Ngwesi. It's a place that truly surpassed our expectations in every way - the people (staff), the surrounding landscape, the animals, the rooms, the food, the entertainment (dancing!)... the list goes on. After travelling all around Kenya, Il Ngwesi was our last port of call and we truly ended our holiday on a high. I can honestly say that it has been the most magical place I have ever been and I would return in a heartbeat. I have been recommending it to everyone I know!

Room Tip: The Honeymoon Suite was incredible

When you hear Ilgwesi, you will just think of another place out there.
Once you are there it when you realise you are in a different world, everything is very unique.
For those who would want to visit, please dont plan for one day at least 3 would be good.
If you are not planning to visit, my advice would be start booking.

Conratulations staff and community of Ilgwesi

Il Ngwesi is a beautiful community run lodge in the Laikipia plateau of central Kenya. The bandas are open to the air and provide stunning views of the surrounding area. The lodge is run by members of the Maasai community and all profits are returned to the community. There is an abundance of wildlife and the lodge overlooks a waterhole which ensures great game viewing even if you have not left the lodge. The staff is friendly and welcoming and will give a glimpse into the lives within their community. I highly recommend this lodge to anyone looking for an out of the way place to stay in Kenya and enjoy the wildlife as well as learn about the Maasai culture. I've been there four times and it never gets old.

This is the best of Africa--Masaai warriors in their regalia, adapting to provide for their communities by protecting the environment and luring back the wild animals to former grazing land, and greeting guests to this unique hotel, lovely, open to the air, built by Masaai warriors with materials from their land. Totally relaxing, safe, comfortable--the perfect place to decompress from a western lifestyle and begin an African vacation. Wonderful scenery, wild animals all around, nothing man made in view except this very special hotel. And if you are looking for a place away from crowds and conflicts and cameras (except your own), you've found it here. It smells wonderful, the food is fresh and delicious, and it is completely and totally relaxing. Bring your own chocolate. And binoculars.
