Description: Kongoni Camp is situated less than 2 km North from Nanyuki Town off the Meru road. Set against the dramatic slopes of Mount Kenya, and nestled in indigenous forest with olive, cedar and relics of other tree species, Kongoni Camp has a peaceful energy about it. Tucked away in a tranquil surrounding, Kongoni is unique and rustic.Despite its proximity to town Kongoni is designed in a way that brings you closer to your environment by having you dine, have coffee or stay in a place surrounded by the wild, creating an attachment to the bush. The main building housing the bar& restaurant is laden with history. Originally built as a barn in the early 1960’s, it served as a storage for exclusive hunting safaris, and has been carefully restored maintaining its original character. Kongoni’s spacious facilities make it an ideal venue for big groups and smaller parties. Kongoni is situated in a picturesque landscape, and home to many bird species. At least 75 bird species can be found on the extensive grounds.

After thinking that you've been conned into driving down the worst road in Africa, you will arrive at Kongoni's gate and the track that leads you down to the the restaraunt. Inside is an eclectic mix of pop-art and military momentos from visiting British troops.
The welcome is warm and the food is very good. Service can be slow when its busy, but it does mean the food is fresh. Its good value, and with a few beers thrown in, the bill is normally less than KSH1,500 each for a 2 course meal. The fillet steak is something to try as they are very good indeed.
They open for breakfast, which for KSH500 seems reasonable value for the usual cereals and full english (should you wish).
All in all, a safe bet for food and somewhere that is definitely worth a visit when in Nanyuki.

Visited here in Nov 2010 and again August 2011 as part of my "do I want to move to Nanyuki" trip. It's a bit hard to find, but on the A2 as you leave Nanyuki on the north road towards Isiolo. There's a sign not far after the church and then about 300m down the bumpiest dirt road makes you wonder if you took the right turn. Once you get there it's nestled in some woods, it's part of a lodge and hotel, but the restaurant is open to all, and frequented by a mix of locals and expats. Service isn't the fastest, but neither is it tedious. Just plan on enjoying the time with friends / family etc. Plenty of european style food on the menu and some specials the chef has made up. Nothing to fault. My six year old step daughter has been both times and though she is fussy has filled up, so was allowed the ice cream ;-)

The place is like a big converted barn, very spacious but... If your there after dark take a jacket as it gets a bit chilly. Just outside the door is a log fire - and both times I've been there I've ended sat there swapping stories and phone numbers. I'd have to say, if I wanted to start a bar this this isthe kind of place like to own. It's unique, rustic and you wouldn't know you are just on the edge of town.
