Knowledgable staff, we hired boots and sticks for the Narrows hike, we got great info and the rates were extremely reasonable. I honestly think you would have to be nuts not to hire these items to do this hike. It made it so much more enjoyable.

My hubby & I went to see Zion Natl Park & booked a tour w/ ZAC. Dave was great via phone helping book the trip & providing all the needed info. The day we arrived in Springdale, I was excited to see where to go & the employees were friendly & greeted us. Amelia recommended an easy hike for the early evening. Our tour guide, BJ, was the best! He was friendly, funny, knowledgeable, & patient! I took a zillion pictures! We hiked Angel's Landing after biking into the park & later he took us to Weeping Rock, Pa'Rus via bikes and we even jumped into the river! A bonus they don't advertise is BJ had a camera & took pictures! We got a flash drive w/ the pics when our day was done! BJ even gave us recommendations for our next day hikes.

We rented equipment to do the Narrows : The socks, shoes, pants, staff and a bag. There is a small orientation video and then equipment is given out. The socks , shoes and staff is a must. I am on the fence about the pants. It certainly made the hike more comfortable for us - we didn't feel cold or in pain like some people , but a lot of folks did fine without it too . A bag is recommended if you have camera and for mental peace! Choose shoe sizes that are slightly bigger than the normal size and socks that fit tight .

My only grouse is that they close a bit too early - at 8pm . With the 1 mile back to the shuttle stop, taking the shuttle and then driving to return the rental, we need plan well in advance.

I would rent from this place again for the narrrows

Baily and Diana were our guides they took us out for a day with 2 other folks (max 4 on this trip). They did a fabulous job of showing us a good time, keeping us safe, telling us some history of the canyon, teaching us some about repelling, adapting the day to the abilities and desires of the group and just having a wonderful day. We went to water canyon, hiked maybe 3 miles in, did 6 or 7 repels, learned how to use a "stopper", practice our figure 8 knots, use a "pirahna" repelling device, set up the ropes for a repel and just had a great time. The point was not just to hike, repel, see beautiful rock formations (all of which we did) but also to really understand what we were doing and how to do it. Fantastic day! Highlight of our 2 week trip out west.

We were mostly happy with everything, even with the things we didn't need - ah there's the rub! We rented of water gear for hiking the Narrows of the Virgin River. On the hike we were one of the few hikers/waders who rented the waterproof pants - not necessary. Shoes, neopreme socks and staff - yes, pants no. 98 degrees air temp so even the 57 degree water temp up to our waist in one of two spots would have been very comfortable. They could have been more forthcoming with us.

We never want our customers to feel "over sold," so please accept our apologies for your experience. Spring can be a very difficult time to offer good equipment recommendations for The Narrows, as conditions change so rapidly. This year, for example, we went from high water/snow melt/full dry suit conditions, through dry pants conditions, and into summer conditions in only a few weeks. During this time, we had customers returning each day with wide-ranging opinions about whether they had too much or too little insulation/cold protection, which makes sense since people's comfort leves vary so widely. Amidst this seasonal transition, we have a large group of new staff members each spring who haven't seen the full range of conditions in The Narrows, but are trying their best to provide quality information and recommendations. When in doubt, we lean towards safety, which means suggesting more equipment rather than less. We recognize this may look selfish (as more equipment means higher sales for us), but we truly want everyone to be safe and comfortable in The Narrows.

For those looking to get a better idea about how much equipment/insulation they need for The Narrows during Spring run-off, we recommend accessing the river anywhere in Zion Canyon and wading in for a little while. Try to find a shady spot (The Narrows is very shaded) and imagine what it would be like to wade in and out of river all day for the smallest/most cold-sensitive member of your group. it's not a perfect simulation, but it may help you feel better able to make your own judgement about what gear to rent.
