“Nice and very peacefull place to camp”

Wawona is a great place to camp, the only down side was that there was no showers (we had to either wash ourselves in the freezing bathroom sink or drive down to curry village for a $5 per person shower. our camp site was a little too far from all the major hiking trails (sentinel dome, and all major water falls) but if you brought a gas saver car then you wont have a problem. But i took my 08 toyota tundra and hills and curves just killed my gas and my wallet ($5.01 gal). all in all it was a great trip, a bit expensive but well worth it.

  • Liked — the rangers were very helpfull, very peaceful and natural place
  • Disliked — NO SHOWERS!! soaring gas prices in wawona village

I originally wanted to stay in Yosemite Valley but all sites were full, so we ended up booking 3 days at Wawona Campground; we loved it. We had site #46 in loop C, near the river/creek and a large pool which we enjoyed everyday after hiking. We visited the valley one day and we enjoyed the landmarks, we got to see a bear up on a tree by Curry Village but I am so glad we did not stay here; too crowded, too many people. It felt good to drive the 30 miles down the valley for some peace and quiet and real camping at Wawona.

We stayed Sunday to Friday in early June at site 88 on forested C loop in Wawona campground. Although the campground was listed as full, there were some no show or early departures since a few sites near us were empty most of the week. C loop is in the back. Along the river are some nice sites that accommodate RVs. The tent only sites, where we stayed, are mostly on a hillside, which allowed a place for kids to explore. The center sites inside the loop are closer together and offer less privacy, although still somewhat shaded. The center also accommodates RVs. Many campers that week were families with pre-teen or younger children. Quiet hours were obeyed and we had a very relaxing stay.

Loop B is a bit more condensed, but still forested. The group area, Loop A is an open meadow with crowded sites near the road, that everyone going to Loop B or C must drive through to get to their sites.

The river is accessible even if you do not have a site there. If you have some down time, it's a nice place to relax. A cold front came through during our trip so we did not have any trouble with mosquitoes. I would expect that could be more of a problem in the summer months.

We spent most of out time in the south end of the park visiting Mariposa grove and Chilnualna falls for 2 days. We went to Glacier point one day and the Valley one day. We pushed ourselves a bit on the hikes so we were too tired to get an early start in the morning. Therefore we did not really get to the visitor centers and valley attractions. If your focus is on the valley, it would be much easier to stay there, unless you want to spend a lot of time driving.
