“The only "good" food experience in the valley of Yosemite”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

I will not be redundant in my review here....The beautiful dining room, the views..the excellent first class service...It's all here...You also pay for it as well..slightly above everything else in the park...If it is all worth it in the end is a matter of personal choice. My feeling is most people who dine here are use to spending this amount of money for food and lodging and don't bat an eye when forking over $50 for a steak. Having said that it is a complete separate experience here than anywhere else in the park. It is as if you are in a different park but with the same surroundings. We ordered the special soup and entree of the day. A cioppino soup with unlike everything else we had eaten in the park was flavorful and spicy. Our special short rib pasta was hearty, tender..so full of flavor..The wine list had a nice range of by the glass and bottles. Bread basket was also excellent. I would recommend this place if you have the budget and the desire to actually get a plate of food with flavor all in the most spectacular dining room.

“A restaurant with a very special view and dedicated food servers”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

If you're traveling to Yosemite, you know you are going to be traveling to a special place. What will impress you is the remoteness of the Yosemite Valley and how they can get supplies in to take care of the masses that visit the National Park on a regular basis. The Ahwahnee Hotel is a wonder all its own. In the heart of the hotel is a cavernous restaurant that is just awe-inspiring as you walk in to be seated. There is not a bad place to sit in this restaurant. One would think that up close to the windows is the way to be seated, but honestly, their room is so big, if you sit anywhere, you get a good view from any vantage point. This is my third time with friends and family to visit this restaurant (always for lunch) and we have been lucky enough to see a small bear wander by our window a few years back, but not recently. But we were not disappointed with the absence of bears simply because this is Yosemite Valley. There is just so much to look at, and the windows of this restaurant are so large and give an "equal" view to all who are sitting there... you will feel blessed to be able to take in the sites and to appreciate the effort people make to build these structures, work there, and server the tourists and visitors.

For those of you reading my posts, I'm usually an upbeat, appreciative person. I give credit where credit is due. So read into this post what you will.... First and foremost, this is the most formal sit down restaurant available in the area, so you have no real choices. If you are going there for the food, don't plan to be that excited. The views and the Yosemite Valley along with the hotel's uniqueness is why you are going there. The service by the crew that work in the hotel is definitely 5-star. The attitude that is served up with the meals is always fresh and invigorating and you can tell that the people who work there are best at what they do and that they genuinely care about what they are doing. The food could definitely be better. It's not mediocre by any measure, but it's not at the top of the mark either. My soup this past visit was tasty, but way too salty (and I like salt). My wife's fish did not appeal to her at all (and she's pretty lenient). Our friends (California locals and a visitor from China) were likewise not impressed with the food, but they were overwhelmed with the atmosphere. And a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, the atmosphere and service is a solid 10. The quality of the food is about a 6 overall. I feel bad about leaving this type of review, because I really cannot appreciate the challenges of serving and/or cooking/preparing food in the Yosemite Valley... it must be very challenging to meet the demands of many multi-national visitors... but I think the main problem is that they don't have anyone really analyzing the menu from a planning perspective all the way out to a survey level to receive solid feedback. I think if they "fine tune" their menu, they will be in very good shape. Nonetheless, this is a great restaurant with the best location hands down, and the people working there make up for the lackluster meals... When you leave this restaurant, you will quickly forget the food experience and remember the great people who work there and the beauty of the establishment... The alternatives are mediocre pizza, fried foods, and bagged snacks from stores close by... So my recommendation is strong to take your friends and family to this restaurant over the others... and be sure to make reservations first!

“great breakfasts and dinner”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

The trout I ordered for dinner was just delicious - all the side dishes and appetizers were tasty and well presented. Service was very good - nothing to complain about - had one of the best dinners on our trip here. Breakfast buffet was also very good and the children commented how happy they were with the assorted food selection. Also, the ambience of the dining room added further satisfaction of our meals.

“Worth the extra Bucks”
Reviewed June 11, 2014

Ahwahnee Hotel bar and restaurant were by far the bes offering for lunch or dinner. It may seem expensive but consider this alternative experience : I ordered food at the Valley shops got a hamburger half raw for $18.00 it was nasty could not even eat it, flys and mess everywhere nasty. Not to mention the out of control kids and busy hectic atmosphere the surrounding was atrocious. The meals at Ahwahnee dining room or bar offered a much better experience just for a few more dollars- worth every penny. Go for it you will not be sorry!
