Owner description: Though not as tall as Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall is popular for the green foliage that surrounds it year-round and the rainbow mist it produces as the water cascades.

Easy to walk to and not many people so early in the morning. Cool weather in April but prepare with a parka and gloves. Beautiful view and excellent picture taking opportunity.

The hike to the falls are moderate, but they are extremely crowded. I would advise going early in the day.

the mist trail that leads to the top of vernal falls, I believe is about 1.4 miles one way (from the happy isles nature center) I do remember reading it has a 1400 foot elevation gain.

it is by no means an easy hike, but not impossible. our family is fit, and when our kids were young, our 4 and 6 year old boys were able to make the hike without having to be carried.

the mist trail is so named because of the constant splashing of the vernal falls water. if the sun is shining you are most likely to view several rainbows along your way.

even in the summer, you are also likely to get a good soaking. the water does not splash you, but the constant pounding of the water at the base of the falls creates a fine mist which will eventually get you.

the trail has several segments where stairs or steps have been created by the granite that lines the merced river. be careful and bring good hiking shoes, as it can get very slippery. and if you have a lightweight rain jacket, that can come in handy too, especially in the spring when the falls will be at their fullest.

It's still great! Of course not as spectacular water flow as in the spring but still impressive. Wife and daughter had never been to Yosemite and they found the hike to Vernal to be exciting. I look forward to taking them back some spring when the water flow is amazing.
