“Difficult hike to top of upper yosemite falls, but the view is extremely worth it”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

As many reviewers have warned, this is not an easy hike. Very strenuous hike, but definitely do-able if you just take it slow.

The first one third of the hike is rather manageable, and brings you to a nice viewpoint with a perfect view of Half Dome. Walk another 20min more (part of it is downhill) and you will be greeted with a magnificent view of the Upper Yosemite Falls right before your eyes. The view is breathtaking and simply amazing. To the left, you see the falls, while to the right in the far distant, you see half dome.

Congratulations, you're now at the base of the upper yosemite falls :) From this point onwards, you will just keep climbing upwards until you finally breathe a sigh of relive when you see the sign saying you're 0.2 miles away. There, the most difficult part is over :)

Then you will start to go around and down until you see the falls. Theres a view point right at the end which is a little dangerous/ steep to get to, but theres metal railings by the side so it isnt that bad :)

We packed some sandwiches so we could enjoy our lunch next to the falls. After which, it'd be a long walk all the way back down again :)

I'd recommend starting early, about 8am and take your time to go up so by the time you're at the top, it is about lunch time :)

Bring plenty of water, we brought 2 litres of water each and it wasnt enough. And dont double book hikes on this day :)

“Upper Yosemite Falls hike - highlight of our trip”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

The hike to the top of Upper Yosemite Falls was probably the highlight of our holiday this year. It's pretty tough - a 6 hour round trip to the top, gaining some 2,700ft, but amazing views all the way up and the view at the summit is simply breathtaking - also an interesting time to discover whether you have a fear of heights (turns out I do!)

If you go for the Upper Falls, set off early (before 7am if you can) as the midday heat can be punishing and the final killer ascent on this hike is very exposed. Wear proper hiking boots, bring plenty of water, and have a steely resolve to get to the top - it's worth it!

“Pretty, but populated”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

The falls are accessible with a very short walk from the road. This makes them a VERY popular destination in the park. The trick is getting there early. I was doing a sunrise shoot in the adjacent Cook's Meadow and there were only a handful of cars from 5-8 AM. After that, it steadily fills up to the point where nature's charm gets overshadowed by people abundance.

“Really, do we have to drive for 4 hours to come to this place”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

Really, do we have to drive for 4 hours to come to this place? The answer is a BIG NO. There is nothing exciting to see here after driving for more than 4 hours from SFO and paying $20 for the entry fees

“Nice waterfall, easy walk from the road / shuttle bus stop”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

Even though it was pretty packed with tourists the day we visited, you can still get a great view of the fall with a short paved walk from the main road to the base of the fall. We even had a stroller with us as we brought a toddler along. Keep in mind though at the base of the fall, you can only see the lower falls, not the opper falls or the middle cascades. To see the whole thing you'll have to take a hike to the top of the falls or drive outside of the Yosemite Valley to another vantage point (I recommend Glacier Point).
