Hantavirus Warning -- Cabins Infested with Mice!

Review of Curry Village
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 1, 2008
We stayed in a cabin at Curry Village for 3 nights from April 20-22.
Sunday and Monday night were in cabin 217, then for our 3rd and final night on Tuesday we moved to cabin 219. Our departure was Wednesday April 23.

Cabin 217 was infested with mice. It is obvious staff were aware of the rodent issues, as duct tape was used to cover areas where the mice were entering. I do not consider duct tape as an
acceptable repair measure. It appears other repair attempts were also made, which alerted me the cabin had rodent issues for a long time.

The mice in our cabin were white footed deer mice, and are known for carrying the Hantavirus. Humans catch the Hantavirus from mice feces, urine and saliva. Mice infected with the virus usually appear healthy. Due to the extent of the infestation, the cabins have major issues with code enforcement and environmental safety concerns.

Mice feces were found everywhere in our cabin, nightstand drawers, desk drawers, on the floor, in the heater, etc. The mice got into our luggage bags, and our food bags. We had to hang our food bags from the ceiling. I forgot about the chewing gum and mints inside my purse, and we found mouse feces on the desk next to my purse, as well as inside my purse. We felt dirty and unclean during our stay at Curry Village. After returning home I laundered all our luggage bags.

Sleep deprivation was an issue, as the mice kept us awake with loud noises. On the 2nd night I stayed awake almost all night having "mouse wars'. I pointed a flashlight where the mice were entering the cabin, and had shoes lined up at the foot of the bed.
Every time a mouse ran out I threw a shoe at it.

Curry Village has a great location in the middle of the Yosemite valley. The view is awesome. Lodging at Camp Curry is less expensive than other lodging in the park, but not worth the health risk. Despite the 30-45 minute drive, Wawona offers fooms for only $40 - $50 more per night.

The Hantavirus is a deadly virus -- stay in a cabin at Curry Village at your own risk.

Curry village wood cabins: Old, poorly maintained, completely infested by mice. We spent 2 nights in Cabin 30B; found mice nesting in our clothes, and found old dead mouse and debris behind dresser drawers. Then spent 2 nights in Cabin 22A, trapped 4 mice during this time, and found plenty of mouse feces on various surfaces in cabin.

These cabins are unsanitary and unsafe for human habitation in my opinion. Stay elsewhere in the park.

See photos attached.

This was our second trip to Yosemite. We are campers and used to sleeping in tents. The tent cabins are more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, but they are extremely close together. I could hear people snoring in neighboring tents! One night some people were making noise, but the park rangers came quickly to handle the situation. You are not supposed to cook at Curry Village, but many people prepared food. We heated water for oatmeal and coffee using the outlet in the bathrooms. Our tent did not have an outlet. Each tent has a large bear box which held a cooler, our food, and toiletries . We ate at the cafeteria several times. The food was adequate, even for our son who is a vegetarian. The desserts could have been better, but the price is not too bad considering it includes unlimited portions, and beverages. It was possible to eat very healthily at the buffet. One night we got pizza at Curry Village which was ok, the buffet actually suited our needs better since it had more vegetables and fruits. There are not enough showers at Curry Village and you need to time when you go. The pool was very nice and offered a relaxing time after hiking. We were disappointed that the National Park Service does not offer a Ranger Program- there were movies each evening. One evening we walked over to the campground to hear a ranger program. There were bears at curry village-- so be careful not to leave things out!

It would be fine if the price for a simple tent would be 20, but not 120 dollars a night. When i was checking in during the late hours i thought it would be in a small wooden house, however it turned to be a cold tiny tent! I barely slept that night because of the noise produced by of our partying neighbours. I would better sleep in my car if I new that. If you plan to travel to yosemite, i would recommend to make reservations in advance as all other accomodation choise were completely booked. Yosemite itself is a spectaculat place, the heaven just few hours drive from the bay area and sacramento. Recommend to do hiking to the spectacular falls. takes app 1-1.5 hours, much less than was mentioned on the hiking map (3 hours), but the trail is quite steep, you should climb 700 metres, so be prepared for that! The lenght is 5.5km. It is a spectacular place! Besides, we travelled in august and the main waterfall was dry! Recommend yosemite, do not curray village accomodation!

This was the first time I stayed in Curry Village, and it was in Janurary of 2008. Yosemite is great year round, but if you plan to visit the Valley, I'd suggest you go in winter. I was there for 3 days, and I did not see ONE RV. You could actually get around fairly easily in a car, and park in any avaiable location. If you have an inclination for photography, the opportunities in Winter are endless, and far superior to Summer. Spring is also nice, but the crowds pick up toward the end of Spring. But I digress...

We stayed in a "heated" tent cabin, and we had that poor heater working triple overtime our whole stay. You open the door, and you lose much of the precious heat generated by the small, overworked heater. However, it did the job satisfactorily for basically a canvas tent. I'd say the overnight temps were in the upper 50s in the room, when it was around 25-30 degrees outside. You'll be fine if you bring the proper gear, and use a sleeping bag on the bed. Speaking of which, the bed was quite uncomfortable to me, but I'm very sensitive to bad beds. I'm sure if you are used to camping, this would feel like heaven. To me, it was better than sleeping on the ground, but still uncomfortable.

The tent cabins are very tightly spaced, and I could see in Summer this place being a zoo. I saw a sign in the shower room that said they have 36 showers for 507 guests. I'd probably HATE being there with that many guests. Speaking of the showers, they are actually in pretty good order. The water was quite warm, and the facilities looked very clean. Again, keep in mind it is winter, and there were probably, at most, 15 cars parked in the lot each morning. So, that really helped with the cleanliness and overall experience.

In summary, I'd highly recommend this place in winter. You'll have the place virtually to yourself. The rates are about half in winter too, which makes it better to stomach than the ridiculous price in summer. We really enjoyed this visit, having Yosemite all to ourselves. Summer in Yosemite Valley is too crowded to enjoy. Tuolumne Meadows is where to go for summer visits.

Yosemite is wonderful! Curry 's "cabins" not so much. The word cabin conotes a seperate structure, suggesting privacy. These provide no such thing. they are actually DUPLEXES. Unless you are deaf, double the price and plan on renting both sides. Plan way ahead, and be clear
in writing that you need both sides of the same duplex. The heat worked, but there were large gaps around the door, and the latch would
not deter a detirmined 10-year-old, never mind a bear. I hate to think
how much energy is wasted through their total lack of maintenance. Paper-thin walls is an overused term, but applies here. Amusingly, there was an electronic "knock sensor" with a flashing light on the door -- this place really IS for deaf people! No attempt had been made
to clean the floor since 2007. When we asked for some sand on the icy slope in front of the door, a man showed up with two plasic CUPFULLS of sand -- they spare no expense in this joint. If you don't enjoy intimacy with strangers, bring friends or rent both sides. Next time, I'll stay at Yosemite Lodge in Mariposa, which was very nice and reasonably priced.
