“If you gave seen the Redwood Groves this will be a disappointment”
Reviewed May 18, 2014

The grove of Sequoias was sparse and steep. The trees are magnificent, but having already been north to the Redwood groves, it was disappointing. Not nearly as spectacular.

“nice time filler”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

It was a nice way to fill a spare morning. The walk down was easy enough. The walk back up makes you puff but we didn't need to stop (we're not hikers, "walk the dog" level of fitness). Do take water. Not loads of parking.
The trees are lovely as always. Without sounding like a hippy, I really love leaning against big trees and feeling just how big, strong and amazing nature can be.
I will say though they are not as big and spectacular as the trees I have seen further north in Washington/Oregon. Some gentlemen we passed on the way back asked "are these the big trees?" pointing to the sequoias, which tells me it's not just me. They are big a beautiful but are not spectacular enough to know they are special immediately.
There are about 5 big trees in the first little clearing, then maybe another 4 or 5 spread further along the path amongst other trees. The word "grove" is a little generous IMO.
If you've done a lot of walking in the days prior around Yosemite, are a little tired and have seen big trees elsewhere, you make feel the drive, and hike down and up the hill isn't really worth it. If you're an avid hiker and naturist, you're stopping on the way somewhere else, or you've never seen big trees before, it would be worth it for you.
The drive there from El Portal was really lovely with some great pull-out spots for photos. Very scenic.

“A stop to see the sequoia's”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

I travelled in from San Francisco via route 120 to Yosemite. Merced Grove was a few miles in after the entrance to the park. The trail is 1.5 miles down to the grove and drops 600 feet. I hike daily and it took 45 minutes to reach the grove. The trail is unpaved and moderately steep. The first half mile is flat then it drops. The trees are spectacular and it a great first stop into the park. A bathroom is available. The day I hiked the trail there were very few hikers.
