I hear we were lucky as the pass can be closed this time of year. It was opened, the weather was perfect and the views were crisp and clear! We were able to take some jaw dropping pictures. There was still Fall color. We were very pleased with the drive. This is the time of year to go. The parking lots are not that big, if it was crowded I would think it would have been disappointing. It felt like we had numerous spots all to ourselves.

Travelled on 10-11-13 when the government was still closed yet there were rangers in the huts at both entrances. We were allowed to drive the route but were instructed to not stop/take pictures. There were very few cars/visitors because of the government shutdown which made the trip even better; no one pushing from the car behind. Tioga Pass was listed as closed in the early morning, but as we approached from Stockton at noon/thereabouts, it was magically open. We took 120 East and the views were stunning. We saw trees burned from the recent fire. The driving could be scary for the inexperienced. What amazed me were the long distance views of the other mountains that were snow capped and the lake/river waters that are so clear! Also amazing were the number of bicyclists that were using 120! This is a must-see for anyone travelling in this area, even if it is out of the way.

Not as scary as they make out - have just driven in France in the pre Alps and believe me it is a lot worse here! However, fantastic entrance or exit to Yosemite - which I loved visiting this time last year.

A beautiful drive. We were lucky that the government shutdown finished 2 days before our booking and we were able to go. We drove from Las Vegas to Yosemite and took this pass. It was a beautiful drive with many scenic views. A few of the bends were a bit scary with no guardrail but with the snow (or just ice) on the side of the road and up the hills, it was truly a majestic sight, though I can see why it gets closed during the winter. Highly recommend anyone taking this road.

It's a short uphill hike from the parking lot at Tioga Pass. Gaylor Lakes and Gaylor Peak. Though the whole area around Tioga Pass has a lot of great hiking. Keep in mind that it's around 10K' feet so be prepared for the effect of elevation on your lungs.
