Travelled on 10-11-13 when the government was still closed yet there were rangers in the huts at both entrances. We were allowed to drive the route but were instructed to not stop/take pictures. There were very few cars/visitors because of the government shutdown which made the trip even better; no one pushing from the car behind. Tioga Pass was listed as closed in the early morning, but as we approached from Stockton at noon/thereabouts, it was magically open. We took 120 East and the views were stunning. We saw trees burned from the recent fire. The driving could be scary for the inexperienced. What amazed me were the long distance views of the other mountains that were snow capped and the lake/river waters that are so clear! Also amazing were the number of bicyclists that were using 120! This is a must-see for anyone travelling in this area, even if it is out of the way.
