Our timing was perfect. We reached Yosemite Valley at midday with bright sunshine and 22 degrees Celsius (about 74 F) and were told that the Tioga Pass had been closed since the afternoon before due to snow. We enjoyed the afternoon in Yosemite as we had planned and when it was time to head off in the direction of Bishop the authorities reopened the road.
The dive is very scenic with many great views. For us Olmsted Point looking down the valley was the highlight.
After crossing the highest point on the road (3030m - 9945ft) at the eastern park gate the road takes a spectacular decent toward Mono Lake.
We travelled with a small private tour, Bundu Bashers, and our guide Jeff had the local knowledge to bring this trip to life. I can highly recommend Bundu Bashers tour from San Francisco to Las Vegas via Tioga Pass and Death Valley.
