Owner description: A good place for hiking to get away from the crowds.

There is a definite sense of the High Sierras at Tuolumne Meadows. A stroll in the meadows along the many creeks and streams is great. With many peaks in the distance along with Lembert Dome, the scenery is fantastic. Also, a lot fewer people, but not a wilderness by any means. July is the prime time for wildflowers in the meadows. Depending on the snowpack, the amount of water and flowers will vary.

There are so many wonderful short hikes in the Toulomne Meadows area but I don't want to tell you about the best (Toulomne River pools) because then they will be too popular.

If the crowd in the valley is to much for you and you have the time, head up to Tuolumne Meadows. It is about 10 degrees cooler and has a lot less people.

The meadows is wonderful in the Spring/Summer with the flowers in bloom. Remember, it is higher up, so it takes longer for the flowers to bloom.

The Lyell Fork and the Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River are here as well. I love to walk along both especially in the late afternoon or early evening.

Lembert Dome is an excellent hike but be careful at the top. The granite is very slippery and the fall is a long way down.

We stayed on this side of the park, because it is less crowded and more open, since our famiily was staying a few days, part at the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge (fixed tents) and part at the tent campground. Good hikes on this side of the park, one just needs to pace themself more since it is at 9,000 ft. rather than the 4,000 ft. of the western side of the park. We shopped in Mammoth Lakes before entering the park, so we had supplies.
Favorite sight: Lempert's Dome. Nice hike on it, and we took the shorter hike behind it. Lots of long hikes all over Tuolumne Meadow area for the diehard hiker; and, of course, the climbs are breathtaking. When our offspring showed us where she had climbed earlier in the week, Cathedral, we were speechless, frightened, and, of course, in awe. We will stick with looking up at those walls, rather than looking down from the top.

My wife and I visited the Yosemite are for our honeymoon in October of 2011 and Tuolumne Meadows was the ONLY place in the whole park that we did not go see. However, I work in the outdoor industry and I went back in August of 2012 to do some climbing with some colleagues and I was amazed at how beautiful the meadows are. It is not as populated as the valley by any means so you can actually hike around without having to get trampled by tourists. There's creeks, meadows, wildlife, peaks, and so much more. You could easily spend a whole vacation in the Tuolumne area and frankly, I highly recommend you do.
