Owner description: Major rock formation in Yosemite.

Can any one thing be more indicative of Yosemite than Half Dome? Half Dome is the symbol of Yosemite and for good reason. It's history, uniqueness, and beauty is linked to Yosemite itself.

There are many ways ot see Half Dome, but the view from Glacier Point and from the Sentinel Bridge are outstanding. One of my favorite spots is just on the side of the road in the valley just at sunset when the fading light hits the face of the dome and produces a diagonal shadow line. In the last 3 days, I shot Half Dome from various places, but a fog-covered dome looked awesome.

I would say "Don't Miss" but the truth is that you cannot miss Half Dome anyway - it's always there, standing proudly.

Such a unique granite formation! Carved/broken by glaciers and also with a native American sotry on how it was formed, Half Dome has a unique "personality." The views are beautiful no matter where you are in Yosemite Valley, and it is often the focal point for many outstanding photographs. During the summer months one can climb Half Dome, but a permit is needed in advance, and one must be in very good shape to master this climb, It is by far my favorite focal point in Yosemite!!

This was a beautiful site to behold! I was truly amazed and the more I see our beautiful pictures, the more I want to go back! This would even be a great day trip if you were visiting the area or lived somewhere close! There are so many places to take pictures of this beautiful rock it never gets old, adding in the seasons, what a true glory to behold! We had one of our pictures made into a portrait that shows the profile of Half Dome, with the glow of the Sun on the back side of it! Amazing!

For those who live at low altitudes and giant spans of flat, glaciated land, don't take this hike lightly! Train on steep inclines with pack loads, and maybe even oxygen depravation mask (overkill, but it was helpful). Also, if you are used to hiking in sturdy gore tex boots, you might want to opt for a pair of trail runners instead!
The trail is full of fantastic scenery and every bit of the trail is pleasant on the eyes! Since you should start up the trail with your head lamp on, before sunrise, you might not get a very good look at Vernal Falls (Mist Trail), but they will be there on the way back! Nevada Falls are the next big view, but everything is gorgeous!
Once you get through Little Yosemite Valley, you are in the home stretch. Keep motoring along to the giant switchbacks that will take you to the sub-dome! Try to follow the trail and not wonder off on to a ledge, like I did. Now for the cables! This is another part of the hike where you will be glad you trained. I was happy that I have good grip and upper body strength at this point! Getting up, and down the cables is an excellent full body work-out! Props to you trail runners out there!
Now that you are up, take a drink and get a bite to eat and marvel at vastness of the view you will have! Spectacular! On the way back down, I started out facing down/front, and while it was quite a view, it was a tad slippery. About have way down, I switched over to backing down, with both hands on one cable and leaning into it with my hip. I recommend the second method, worked well, stable!
