Tuolumne Meadows Lodge
Reviewed June 12, 2006

This fantastic setting high in the Sierra is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS but first timers need to know that the "LODGE" is actually a "High Sierra Camp". That really is how it is classified. Look up High Sierra camps in Yosemite on the internet. You will get a lot of info. I have been coming to Tuolomne Lodge for 11 years. It is a lot like luxurious camping out, but with hot showers and beds with linens and blankets on spring mattresses provided in the tent "cabins". The cabins come in two configurations...four single beds or two singles and one double. The cabins do have wooden floors and screen doors with flaps that close. I always take a down sleeping bag for warmth and flashlight for getting around at nite. The only heat is a very primative sheet metal wood stove whose fire will not last the nite, no matter how you pack the wood. The lodge does provide wood for the stove, but you have to build the fire yourself. The idea is that the cabin is warm only when you are awake to stoke the fire. Be prepared for a cold nite, hence the sleeping bag. I have heard MANY complaints about the showers. They are primative, with concrete floors and at the end of the day, often with a bit of hiking dirt on the floor. However, I LOVE the showers, and taking one at the end of the day is a treasure. The meals at the Dining hall are variable, but if you are hiking all day like we were, it was delicious. The seating is family style...you share a table with others so that all seats are full. You cannot beat this location, but you have to be prepared for primative conditions. A lot of staff are regulars, many who come to work here for love of the high country. They do a great job for very little pay. I tip well and often, even if it seems they are "just doing their job". This site is a MUST VISIT location. You will love it if you come prepared to accept it for what it is..a decent place to sleep and eat that give you easy access to one of the most beautiful high mountian wilderness settings on the planet.

I have the insiders view of the Toulumne Lodge as I worked there for 2 summers about 10 years ago. First you need to know that this is really not a hotel but a group of canvas tents with wooden posts painted green and green wooden floors. In each which can sleep 2, are 2 cots and a wood stove. The blankets and sheets are replaced each morning. I can attest that the quality of the food at the logde is excellent as I was eating the same food the guests were fed. It is somewhat primitive but the location can not be beat. It is open Summer only and the tents are taken down each Fall. I have to say it again you can not beat this location! It is at 8700 feet and you will be less than 100 feet from the raging Tuolumne River. Practically across the Hwy is Lambert Dome- and up the side of that dome is the bubbling cool Soda Spring- which delivers carbonated water-although the carbonation is very weak. I made trips down to the Valley and climbed Half Dome and also visited Mono Lake which has been saved from extinction by restoring the flow from Rush and Lee Vining Creeks. It was on my before you die list! ------Bob
