“Not worth it”
Reviewed June 16, 2011

The location of the Ahwahnee is super. The lobby is pretty nice. But once we were shown to our cottage room, we were very disappointed. There was a stale, musty, almost rotting smell that seemed to come from the bathroom fan. There were cobwebs in our room. Hairs in the bathtub. Certainly not worth the high cost of the room. I thought that any room that provided robes could not be that bad, but it was! We wish we would've stayed somewhere else.

For a night in one of the most spectacular locations in the world, $550 might seem reasonable, but given the utter incompetence of the staff it felt like a slap in the face. First off, the check-in process was chaotic, unfriendly and finally got us into our room way after the check-in time of 4pm (which is an unreasonably late check-in time to start with). We were then also kept waiting for half an hour for a table in the restaurant, plus an extra ten minutes while the manager and another employee had a prolonged public argument, before seating us in a half-empty restaurant. On top of that, the $25 per head breakfast buffet would be shamed by a free breakfast at a cheap motel. The Ahwahnee is a wonderful building, but I would advise anyone to look elsewhere for accommodation until they give this concession to a company that cares to recruit and train its employees.

The three of us stayed two nights in a lovely double double room with large windows that was comfortable, quiet and had fabulous views. With the window open at night you could hear the waterfalls. Yosemite is spilling over this June with lots of waterfalls as this winter had record snow falls. Snow was still deep at Glacier Pt and on many of the upper trails. The bar was extremely overpriced, but you can buy a good bottle of Calif wine in the gift shop for the price of a glass of wine in the bar. As for the food, you pay for the location, and prices/quality were comparable to other National Park lodges. After our day-long hikes we took a swim in the tranquil well-heated Ahwahnee pool which is in a lovely setting, with a brook tumbling by and and a waterfall roaring overhead. It was worth the price to be right in the Valley, hikes and views were magnificant. We rented bikes to ride to trailheads, enjoyed great trail lunches from Degnan's deli where the park rangers stand in line with the rest of us. Overall a great stay - just arrive knowing you're not out to get a lot of your dollar.

We stayed at the Ahwahne for one night. Although the place is beautifully set, and the central building decoration is indeed unique, nothing else justifies the outrageous prices. We would be nevertheless quite satisfied despite that, but the patronizing and even arrogant service was really in contrast to that. After a very long drive we arrive to the hotel located in the heart of the Yosemite National Park at 15:40, and they refused to check us in, since it is fixed to 16:00 there, and we had to wait more than the 20 Min.!!! so the room would be available. We asked only for two minor services (missing towel and ice) and we had to wait more than a hour to have it. It took them more than an hour to fix the air-conditioning that was out of order, and I should emphasize that it was really cold there. When talking to the general manager there during check-out, she agreed with our complaints, but suggested a ridiculous and patronizing compensation. Would she suggest a more generous one (in accordance with the so-called "grandour" of the hotel, and the extremely high prices), e. g. night free valid for the following year, what really are the chances that we may indeed employ use it? Never will stay there again!

We used miles for our airline tickets and points for the hotel in Napa so the cost of two nights at the Ahwahnee did not hurt as much as it could. Our room was very comfortable compared to other National Park lodges we have stayed at in our travels. Also it was the quietest room I have ever stayed in at a NPS lodge. I never heard our neighbors at all. the view of Half Dome from our room was great. The great room in the lobby was very impressive as was the dining room. If you drink I suggest you bring in your own or buy a bottle at the General store because the bar prices are outrageous, $13 for a small glass of Patron tequila.

We had seen a PBS special on national park hotels and we knew we had to go to the Ahwahnee in Yosemite National Park.
It was crazed with tourists on check-in, however we soon found calm and comfort after all the tourista's left on the busses.
The rooms were quaint and spacious and the beds a challenge for low center of gravity types, but comfy once up in there. We splurged on a balcony room and it was well worth the view and having the space to sit and soak up the spring colors. Visually Yosemite is sensory overload for photographer's. Our favorite photographer is Ansel Adams, hence our homage trip to one of the master's of black and white photography. I took my Hasselblad and shot both b&w and color negs. We also had 3 other digitial cameras.

Once we got out and started shooting early, we headed back to relax on the grounds. The service was superb. Period. End of discussion. We were so impressed by the food in the gigantic dining hall, that we ate there two nights in a row. The asparagus consomme' and the trout with rock shrimp were grand! Dinner for two, with a nice Frog's Leap sauvignon blanc was about $130 including tip, which for a New Yorker, is really reasonable. Make your dinner reservation when you check in. There were many people turned away, and your dining choices are limited elsewhere in the park.

Be sure and walk the grounds at twilight and leave your window open at night for fresh air. It was a

Room Tip: Splurge for a balcony.

My guess is that close to 90 percent of the people that enters the doors of the hotel are not guests, but people that's; - "just looking".

Those "visitors" will never wake up to several mule-deers crossing the lawn at first light, and certainly not the black bear on their tail. In the background there was this waterfall down the cliffs, all framed in by dogwood trees in full bloom. A movie from Hollywood could not have made a more perfect setting. The bird life would satisfy most onlookers.

Our waiter Jules, at our breakfast "Honeymoon Table", had been jogging along the northern rim the day before and had been just feet away from a snorting Grizzly. (Jules did not pose for the encl. photo.)

Even the weather was on our side. A snowstorm decided to hit Yosemite two days before we arrived and the entries to the park were stilled rimmed with show in the middle of May 2011.

Apart from a teeming wildlife all around, the hotel is an antiquity, but run after modern standards for excellence. It does not have the fitness center, but it has an outdoor heated pool. Due to conservation regulations they are inhibited from adding an extra bathroom on the 1927 constructions.

The only "but" I was able to pinpoint was the lack of Java software on the business center pc. Without that, I could not log on to my European bank to check account movements on my VISA card. Not one of the 27 hotels we stayed at in the 5 weeks we crossed the US had this software installed. It is a “US of A product” and generally acclaimed in the rest of the world as “a must have in the computer world”. You know what a computer is?

We left The Ahwahnee reluctantly at a speed of less than 10 miles an hour, taking a last "gawk" at one of natures greatest wonders. We did not want to leave, but hotel advance bookings along our path to DC forced us to.

My spouce was against using so much money on a nights stay. After leaving, that topic was forever "grounded"! Does that not say it all?

The environment was perfect, the hotel was perfect and we really felt like “the Honeymoon couple”. Honeymoon should only happen once, right?
