“2 star accommodation at a 4 star price”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2010

Lodge at the Falls provides basic accommodation (no frills room, no frills food hall, no frills service), but at a not-so-basic price. My family (2 adults and 3 young kids) and I have just completed a month's travel through California & Las Vegas, and our 2 bed room was the most basic, yet most expensive accommodation we stayed in during our trip.

Positives:
Location, location, location. In the middle of Yosemite Valley, the sounds of nature surround you. You don’t have to look very hard to be struck by the beauty of the place. Our (small) balcony looked straight out onto a majestic view of a snow-capped cliff. A short walk to Yosemite Falls and various other hiking tracks.

Negatives:
Our room provided 2 double beds (extra cost for a roll-away that required 2 phone calls to get it delivered to the room) and space for not much else.

Summary:
All in all, 2 star accommodation at a 4 star price - but hey, we didn't visit Yosemite for its plush hotels. The scenery is breathtaking (the view from our small balcony was amazing), the air feels fresh, and if coming from the city, the clear night time skies filled with millions of stars is a welcome sight. However, other than what Mother nature provided for free, I was disappointed with what I got for my money.

We stayed for several nights over Easter break. We were so lucky to get a room with a full view of Yosemite Falls. Hearing and seeing the waterfall from our balcony made it a super special experience. We stayed one night at the Ahwahnee (on the same trip) in a non-view room, and I preferred the lodge because of the awesome view.

The furnishings are not fancy but functional, and our room was very clean. The hotel was sold out but it never felt too crowded. We had a rollaway at no extra charge. The adjacent food court sounds awful but was more than adequate for breakfasts. Lunch was a toss up and we never ate there for dinner. Instead we enjoyed the on-site Mountain Room with its terriffic falls view and delicious menu. Easter brunch in the Mountain room was also great, with a wide array of hearty buffet choices focusing on seasonal specialties.

The lodge is motel-style, with parking near your room so there is easy access. Once we parked there, we never moved our car until we checked out. The valley shuttle stop is in front of the lobby, very convenient. We rented bikes for a day which was a great way to tour the valley as there are extensive bike paths. On our 15 mi- ride, we stopped at the village center for lunch and rode to Mirror Lake and Happy Isles Nature Center. However the rental fee was expensive (in our opinion) approx $100 for beach cruisers for 2 adults/2 children. Next time we'll bring our own bikes as it really is the easiest way to navigate the valley.

3 family members & I spent 2 days and 1 night visiting Yosemite. It was our first time there. We decided on the Lodge and all four of us shared one room. Although a bit pricey (our room was basic w 2 queen beds for around $238/night), we all agreed that the Lodge met all of our basic needs and we'd stay there again--it was a great deal for what is available in the surrounding area. The staff was friendly and hard working to meet our needs. The rooms and common areas were very clean. It was a treat to stay in the park directly across from Yosemite Falls.

This hotel was horrible!! The beds were sunken in and you can feel every spring. The blanket and sheets were itchy and did not keep us warm. The rooms are not heated so you have to use an old plug in heater that smells up the room. We had to get a roll away bed for our son and it had a mattress that looked like it was from the 1920's and it was filthy like they found it off the streets. We also had huge ants in our room and to top it off our shower's temperature was either scorching hot or extremely cold. I burned myself from it. None of us slept and this was the worst hotel we ever stayed at, and we've traveled and stayed at many hotels. The internet never worked our entire stay.

I had read the negative reviews about this lodge, and really tried to come with an open mind. I have to say, the surroundings are so incredibly beautiful, how could you complain about the room??? Well, when you see holes in the drapery and a bed spread that must have been from the 70's - I guess you can complain! The bathroom shower really could have been cleaned better, also there were cobwebs hanging from the ceiling fan.. I really think the vendor who has the contract with Yosemite (something Delaware corporation??) - should be held accountable for this. However, the staff was friendly and helpful - restaurant was very good, and there really is nowhere else to stay.

Yes the rooms are a bit dated, but you don't plan on staying in your room too much when you're so close to the falls. Staff was accommodating and had a refrigerator in the room for us. The heater made a lot of noise, but kept us a lot warmer than the 17 degrees it was outside. Lots of hot water for showers/baths. I also really like the convenience of having two restaurants to choose from in such a remote location. Aim the kids & the husband at the food court & let them sort out what they want for lunch. The local free shuttle was convenient too. This was our second stay here; we might try cabin 819 at curry village next time just to change it up a little. The rooms are great given that they're smack dab in the middle of the valley floor. If the rooms were in a large city, I would have much higher expectations. Book well in advance; this place seems to be perpetually full.

The Mountain Room restaurant has an exceptional view of the falls and is very romantic. Food is pricey, but so is ALL of the food. I thought hte Mountain Room had better food than the Ahwanee. The food court offered adequate meals and sure beat cooking while on vacation.

The rooms at the Lodge were just ok, but overpriced. That's common though in the national parks if you wanna stay right inside the parks. The bed was Ok and the room was not the cleanest we have encountered. The Lodge location is great though, just in the centre of Yosemite Valley, with easy access to all attractions. Shuttle stop right in front. large car park, overcrowded during the day tho.
