We kept saying, "really," this used to be rope ladders down to this spot? I personally kept marveling at the engineering of the modern stair structure in place. Yes, it get's the heart pounding, the quads burning, a little vertigo here and there, but we were glad we did it. If you are not physically up for it, don't worry, there really are so many beautiful spots in Yellowstone.

This is a great way to get "up close and personal" with the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone. If you like rocks and waterfalls then this trail is a MUST for you. When you get to the bottom there are great views of the falls and you can "feel" the power of the falling water and even feel some spray when the wind blows the right direction.

Unless you are scared of heights. The trail is actually about 2/3 metal steps afixed to the side of the canyon wall with open grates allowing you to see down. The end of the trails is not at the river but on a platform suspended about 4/5 of the way down.

The trail is very steep and the altitude is quite high (about 8,000 feet) so don't overdo it. Having said that it was easy for me a fit 47 year old. I made the round trip from the parking area down to the bottom of the trail and back up in about 30 minutes and that was with 5 to 10 minutes at the bottom. I did see lots of people resting especially those toting small children (under 5) who seemed to have as much difficulty as the elderly.

Great trail to take in views of the falls. The view is much more close up and awe inspiring from Uncle Tom than other areas at the canyon. Not to take away from Artist Point or other stops along the rim, however this was one the best stops we made at the falls.

The "trail" is essentially a fairly steep set of 326 stairs that leads to a small viewing area that provides a fantastic view of the Lower Falls and of the Yellowstone canyon. As almost every other reviewer has stated, completing this trail is a bit strenuous. But if you are in decent physical condition you can complete this trail without too much trouble. Just plan on taking plenty of time to make your way back to the top - there are several benches along the way where you can stop and catch your breath if needed. I thought that the fantastic view from the bottom of the trail made the effort worthwhile. I definitely would recommend this trail but only to those that are in decent physical condition.

As with all other reviews, the important detail about this trail is that it is a strenuous return climb. The stairs are a metal grid and it did occur to me that anyone with vertigo or a fear if heights did not belong on them. This is too difficult a climb back for small children also. It is a beautiful trek and if you take your time, rest and take advantage of the benches where available it is manageable. And yes there is a walk to even reach the steps, and then the return walk to your vehicle. There is a sign at the start with all the usual warnings and people need to read that before embarking.
