For gorgeous views and the opportunity to see bison, elk, mule deer, moose and if you're really lucky wolves, take a drive through Hayden Valley. This is also the drive between Lake Yellowstone and Canyon Village so any proper YNP itinerary will include some time here.

We saw massive herds of bison in Hayden Valley, spread all over the valley, on both sides of the road and the river. We saw them eating, walking, talking, crossing roads and rivers, fighting, rolling, swimming etc. Amazing experience especially when a herd of around 200 crossed the road all around us. We also saw coyote, bald eagles, elk and a variety of deer and ducks here. Really great location for viewing wildlife!!

This is wide open space as compared to the enclosed forested areas. This is where the bison assemble in the winter.

Leaving Lake Village heading north , you will see several geyser/ hot springs and mud pots as you go into Hayden Valley, here you WILL encounter Bison. Be prepared for Bison roadblocks and use common sense and patience (I know , lacking in many ppl) Don't crowd them , honk your horn or get to close( if you are out of the car) These are Wild animals and they ARE BIG... you don't want on their bad side.
ONE observation I made.... I joked about how it looked like they blocked the road "on purpose" or for fun , but after about the 3rd road block I caught it .... a cow or bull would ease out into the road and stand there ... slowly several of their group grazed up to and crossed the road , then as they were finishing they ones blocking the road , moved on.... WOW they actually held traffic up for the herd .. they did do it on purpose....LMAO!

Saw more bison here than Lamar. Beautiful area, especially in the early morning. Nice for photos with or without beasts.
