We did not have time to go to Lamar Valley so Hayden Valley was our chance to see live animals. We drove through the valley twice and thoroughly enjoyed its natural beauty. The Yellowstone River here was peaceful and surrounded by gorgeous landscape. People came here to see herds of bison (and sometimes wolves and other animals). The traffic would stop from time to time - to yield for bisons. It was the most relaxing driving for us and we treasured every moment in the Hayden Valley.

Certain times of year the wildlife is more plentiful. We went several times during the week. If was fairly quiet most times. One evening while on the Lamar Valley tour, we got to see a herd of pronghorn in Hayden Valley, but that was all. Beautiful scenery, but the time of year you go dictates whether you should see or skip!

We visited Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley in search of wildlife. We did see bison and just missed a wolf sighting (twice). We heard that the spring is the best time to go for wildlife sightings, so we will try that next time. I clicked on "not free" for the park sites because there is an entrance fee to the park, but once you're in, all sites are free.

Lots of people trying to spot wolves and bears with their spotting scopes. Some saw wolves when we were there. Need a scope as the wolves could not be seen with binoculars. Saw a big bison heard. Fun to watch them roll in the dirt and the large bulls snorting and showing their dominance. Dawn and dusk are best times to see wildlife.

While driving through Hayden Valley there was a traffic jam. Everyone was excited because there was a bear across the river. We could see him but not real good. But the ride through the Valley is worth it whether you see a bear or not.
