“Beautiful hotel room”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

We are a family of four and my husband wanted to stay in Yellowstone; our first night was here. This is a very elegant property; the room is very beautiful and comfortable for a family of four. The gift shop has a wide variety of items for sale. It is very expensive to stay and eat here, but where else could you go and have 2 bison sleep in front of your hotel; that was very unique. My kids did not enjoy no pool, no tv, and no wifi although they knew that before going. Lake Hotel dining is very expensive; budget accordingly. For a future visit, it is not likely we will stay here because there are so many other options outside the park.

Overall, this was a decent place to stay in Yellowstone. The cabin was affordable, clean, and decently located. However, the parking was awkward and the room was set up strangely. There were no nightstands by the bed and the bed was in front of the door a bit, so you had to walk around it when you entered the room. The bathroom was not level and on a slant. The shower head in the bathroom leaked so when we returned to the cabin, the floor was soaking wet. The door to enter the cabin did not lock or unlock correctly at times, which was inconvenient.

Although this was our 2nd choice location, it is now our #1 choice. We stayed in the cabins, and were located along the outer edge of the cabin section, so our view outside the door was mostly nature vs. a parking lot.

The location is far quieter than Old Faithful, Canyon or Mammoth Springs, which we preferred. The hotel is nice and they had a string quartet play in the lobby in the evening from 6p-10p. It was so comfortable to sit there, listening to the music and watching the sun set over the lake.

Yellowstone is known for its wildlife, and the Lake Hotel has a couple of Bison that "hung out" there for our three day stay. They were on the property almost every part of the day. My kids fell in love and even named them.

The cabins are large enough, and very quiet. We were told that many hotel guest seek to change to the cabins, due to noise. These are pretty basic, but Yellowstone has so much to offer, that we were rarely in the cabin. 2 double beds, a desk, a bathroom. It was enough for us.

There is a nearby grocery/soda fountain and gift shop. The hotel had a deli and a fancy restaurant. Lake Lodge is within walking distance and had a cafeteria and laundry facilities.

The Lake Hotel also had activities. We booked the photo safari and it was very worthwhile.

Room Tip: Cabins are quieter than hotel rooms.

Green Features: They recycle everything, so the divisions are : glass, plastic, paper, metal, compost and landfill. Most guests seemed to be pretty good about disposing of waste responsibly. Smokers and their cigarette butts seemed to be the common exception.

My husband and I have been to lots of hotels, including the Planters Inn in Charleston which is a 5 star hotel, and Yellowstone Lake Hotel is by far the best hotel we have ever stayed in. Very classy, clean, charming, elegant yet the staff is very friendly, warm and inviting. Very relaxed atmosphere. Our room was beautiful and you can't beat the view of Lake Yellowstone. Reminded us a lot of The Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island. The piano player they have in the lobby was the icing on the cake. Catherine was friendly and played anything we requested. She is fabulous. Tom the bellhop was very friendly and helpful. Marjorie at the front desk was very sweet. There was a little construction going on outside but totally understandable due the the harsh winter. The only thing we would request is that they put a sign outside to direct guests to the front of the building for check in.

One of my favorite places re location but the hotel decor was faded, but not anymore. The hotel has been refurbished to avery high standard all the bed rooms and public areas. Rooms are much better and to higher finish. The restaurant has a central buffet arrangement and well appointed furniture. All the staff as usual very friendly and helpful. No WI-FI yet but enjoy the break in the is now well appointed hotel in one of the most picturesque places in the world.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake facing but large waiting list. I have failed on three trips.

The rooms were completely remodeled with new bathroom, new furniture, carpet, etc. Modern and lovely. Beds were comfortable. Even had a coffe maker in the room. Loved the new screened windows that opened easily to get that fresh cool breeze. No AC but don't need it at all and the heater was a nice quiet electric one that was only on briefly one colder nite. This hotel has a fancy dining room with choice of either a buffet or order from the menu. Food was great as was the service. Reservations are needed. They were turning away visitors without reservations even though there was plenty of empty tables. That was strange. Loved, loved the string quartet playing every evening in the main sitting room overlooking the lake. Don't judge the building by the exterior as it is plain but then again the building is over 100 yrs old. 2 local bison like to munch on the grass around the building so great photo opportunity! Only thing that was poorly run was the little snack shop. It was the only place in the building to get breakfast and they ran out of muffins and other popular things by 8 AM!! Wifi is available but not free unless you have Verizon and can find a hot spot. No TV either but nice to be unplugged for a few days.

Room Tip: request a lake view room but they cost more.

Green Features: They have recycling bins everywhere and even a little basket in the room for paper and metal. Many "green" features.

We had a cabin for 2 nights in the cabin area of the hotel. The cabin was smaller than those at Mammoth and was basic but the shower room and cabin were clean and warm.
We thought it might be closer to the nature and wildlife to stay in the cabins but they were surounded in an ash like substance which only had a few weeds here and there growing in it - nothing for the wildlife to eat which was probably the reason why we didn't see any wildlife. Even getting out at 6:30 one bright sunny morning we didn't see anything other than a few swallows. We could however park the car next to the cabin which was handy. There was no sitting out area for the cabin which was a disapointment.. A small paved area near the main door to the cabin with a couple of chairs would have been nice - there wasn't even a chair in the cabin we could have taken outside.
When we checked in we were asked if we wanted to eat dinner at the hotel we needed to make a reservation, which we did. On the first night we had reserved a table for 8:15 but didn't get in till almost 9pm. The food was OK but not fine dining for fine dining prices. The bar and lounge afterwards was a bit 'palm court' with a lady pianist and we found it somewhat boring. We cancelled the following nights reservation and ate out at lunchtime elsewhere. We did not eat breakfast in the hotel but used the diner in the general store on the lakeside - much more our style!
