“An OK campground”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

This is your typical 400+ site cramped, noisy campground in Yellowstone (though not as noisey as some). It is close to some of the major attractions. Staff was friendly. Showers are included in the price, be beware that they are in desperate need of updating and repair (rusted shards of metal sticking out from under the dividers... tetnus shots not included with the price to my knowledge). Do yourself a favor and go backcountry camping (with the proper gear and bear spray). It is free, not crowded, and quiet!

Room Tip: Make reservations in advance as they usually fill up.

This campground is really good for families. It is located near several points of interest like the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Norris geyser basin, etc. it is centrally located and makes your stay at Yellowstone very convenient. The showers are great, but you have to walk or drive a little ways away from your site to the visitor center area (but its worth it! The showers are clean and there is plenty of hot water). The campsites are a little too crowded together, and many of them don't have tent pads. The ground is uneven in some places. The bathroom near the campsites is not great. There is no hot water, which makes washing your hands and face very unpleasant. However, these small imperfections are no big deal and this campground is perfect for families. Beginners and novices in the camping arena will enjoy this site. More advanced outdoorsman should look for a more remote location to experience Yellowstone.

We spent two nights in a cabin in Canyon Village Yellowstone at the end of July. The cabin was very basic, but clean and comfortable. Our cabin had two queen beds, a desk, and a bathroom, so we didn't have to use a community bathroom, as with some of the other locations within the park. Everyone in the Canyon Village area were friendly and helpful. We even got to see some elk from the window of our cabin!
My only complaint throughout the park are the prices they charge for food. We had several choices of places to eat in the Canyon Village, but we chose the cafeteria. I think charging more than $8 for a simple sandwich is highway robbery! The good thing is that the cafeteria has a large selection of items to choose from.

Stayed only 1 night. Got to check in early. Stayed in western cabin. Room is mediocre but for Yellowstone out in the wilderness it's probably very good. It is better than the Old Faithful cabins. It was clean and towels were good. Beds are ok but springs seem worn. Bedding is ugly.

We stayed at Canyon Village Cabins the last night we were in Yellowstone. It was by far the best night in the park. The cabin was clean and everything looked like new. There was a little table in our cabin that we ended up playing cards at and resting our tired hiking legs. It was quiet and peaceful for a good nights rest and to enjoy the wildlife that wandered around between the cabins. If looking for a place to stay in the park, this would be our first choice!

As tent campers, this location was not ideal. The campground is tightly packed - you will be right next to your neighbors, and hear every screaming child, crying baby, lovers spat, etc. The ground is like cement - it's incredibly difficult to drive the stakes for your tent -- luckily we had a mallet, but even then, it took a LOT of force to set up the tent. Additionally, there are so many large rocks and tree roots in the ground that it was so tough trying to find a decent spot to set up this tent, especially with all the trees in the campground. AND, to make it worse, the ground was sloped. NOT FUN.

Bathrooms were close by but again, surrounded by trees, making it a challenging walk if you had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

The pro of staying here is the central location. It's so close to all the major attractions in the park.

Showers? Ugh. I hate how they have the "shower police." You will get 2 "free" showers per night no matter how many people you have at your campsite. The rest of your party will need to pay. I just found this annoying. Plus, the showers aren't 24/7 - they open at 7am during the summer peak, so for people who are early risers, you're going to have to be okay with a late start on the day. Why can't they at least open at 6? The showers were not fun -- I took my shower during a rainstorm and the ceiling LEAKED. So you couldn't even dry off -- after you got out of the shower, your towels and clothing were soaked! What a joke.

Room Tip: Do NOT use the women's showers during a rainstorm - the ceiling LEAKS.

This campground is VERY big, you can expect to be rubbing up against your neighbors, which for many people in RV's is not a big deal. If you are in a tent, you might have to search for a spot to put your tent. There are no specific tent platforms, and when we asked the campground host, he told us that it's the kind of campground where "you put your tent where it will fit".

Despite the tight tent spots, the bathrooms were clean, had lots of hooks, warm water, places to wash dishes, and showers are included in the price of your spot. Showers were clean, laundry facilities were plentiful, and everything went smoothly.
