Canyon Village Campground

We stayed at the Canyon Village Campground last week for 4 nights. Our group was comprised of 3 families traveling together in 3 RVs. When we made reservations last March we did so for two of the families and then the third family made later reservations that the park staff said they would try to link. When we checked in, the third family was booked in a different loop but then the staff looked at the size of the other 2 sites we were given and thought we could combine- they were right and this made our stay so much nicer!
As others have said, the campground is heavily wooded (we could hear the trees clacking together in the wind) but there is not much undergrowth so you can see into other sites. Our sites were nicely sized, however some sites- for those in tents, it seems- look very exposed. We were in F-loop which included RVs and tents. If I were car camping with a tent I would definitely ask for a tent-only loop.
The Canyon Village area has a lot to offer. Besides the showers and laundry facility just down the hill from the campground there are also a number of restaurants, stores, and a very nice visitor center. The location is central to the park being on the east side of the middle portion of the figure 8 of main roads. We liked being close to the Hayden and the Lamar Valleys for wildlife viewing (the drive to the Lamar Valley takes about 40 minutes but it's gorgeous). On the day we checked in, there was a large male Mule deer in the woods across from the turn-in to our loop- he apparently liked the spot and was there all day.
Campfire wood is available at the store- expensive at $7 a box. Ice is also for sale at $3 per bag of cubed or block ice. The bathrooms were always clean. I used the shared dishwashing sink twice- bring gloves the water is ice-cold. While the weather was in the 70's during the day- we scored on the sunshine- it does get cold at night. One morning it was 34 degrees and I was grateful for the extra wool blanket we brought along.
When we return to YNP- which I am sure we will- I plan to again stay in the Canyon Village area and recommend it to all.

Stayed in Loop E. Restrooms are quite close to all sites, and the evening programs are relevant. Only complaints are that the sites are packed pretty closely and the ground is entirely devoid of vegetation, rendering good housekeeping nearly impossible.

Although not the most private of campgrounds, lots of trees so you'll have shade but you can see what's going on we'd stay here again because it's quiet, the bathrooms and dishwashing area is clean, the showers were clean, the staff was friendly and we enjoyed it. We spent three nights in loop E, left for a couple of nights and came back to loop D - I was worried the second time since we were close to the road leading to the RV loops but it turned out to be just as quiet as loop E. Definitely bring a tarp system though! We had a thunderstorm every night we were there. Plus it gives you some extra privacy.

Room Tip: Ask for Loop E or a site by the "bend" of the loop

We stayed in Canyon Village Campground in one of the tent only loops for three nights. Our site was very quiet after 10p, but not private at all. The restrooms were right across the road and there were other tent sites just feet from ours. Luckily, we never heard any noise! Out of all the campgrounds in YNP, this is by far the most central and well appointed. The showering, laundry, and grocery/restaurant facilities are terrific. We've traveled all across the US staying at many National Parks. CV is a great place to stay and a great value at $20/night and $3.25 for a hot, relaxing shower!! Stay here and you won't be disappointed :)

Room Tip: Book a tent only loop!

We love this campground. The sites are large with lots of trees and the bathrooms were very clean. We have stayed at private RV parks that did not keep their bathrooms so clean and well supplied. The people at the front desk were so helpful that they felt like old friends. The showers are far enough away that we drove to them but parking was not a problem and even though I used them right before the daily cleaning they were pretty clean. There are no hook-ups but we did not find that to be a problem as there is a dump site with two fresh water hoses (one to clean you tanks and another for fresh water fill). Our only mistake was not booking for more than three nights. We noticed the tent sites were also very nice. We will be back.

Stayed in loop J in our tent trailer with 7 and 8 year old. Site was perfect size and ground was flat for our trailer. Lots of trees and shade in the site. Kids could go off and explore a little bit, plus ride around loop and meet other kids.

Cannot say much that others haven't...bathrooms were clean, the little dishwashing room was a nice touch, didn't like the lack of bear lockers, mosquitos sucked down a healthy portion of my families blood, campground was very quiet and had enogh seclusion from neighbors...all in all a solid campground. Oh, and the wood from the campground office burned ver nicely.

Note: Watch out for those late night storms - we had quite a lightening show trigger at 2AM one morning. Scared heck out of my daughter, especially the one that went off right over our heads and shook the entire campground.

Room Tip: Just be sure to give Xanterra accurate information on your trailer size.

Our choice to stay in Yellowstone was centrally located Canyon Village. We had stayed here 20yrs ago and it had changed alot. Yellowstone in general seems much more commercialized. We had made copies of our reservation confirmation and had it with us. We were glad for that. Also when checking out, we had the confirmation of our prices and needed that paper too. Our last two days we found that cell phone access was best in two areas in the village area. Wish we would have asked about that earlier. The gift shops throughout the park carry many of the same items, but if you find something other than a t shirt, best to buy as they do not carry all things. The best selection of Pendleton blankets is at Fishing Bridge General Store. USA made coffee mugs at Old Faithful Gift Shop.
We stayed in Western cabins. They are nice and have a table in the room for you to eat on. The dirt roads getting to the cabins are in need of repair..many chug holes..have to guide your car through the maze. Its good to be out of your cabin early as the cleaning begins early and you may have to wait until late afternoon if they don't get your room early. Sorry to report the mosquitos were really bad and we needed spray all day and in the evening. Its good to know how far a walk a trail is before starting off on it. We saw many who had taken on too long of a trail. Staying in Canyon Village, you see the most spectacular waterfall and canyon. The beauty of it all is undescribeable.
