“Hot tub cabin was quiet but no view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2014

We stayed in a hot tub cabin because that was the only type of accommodation left when we made our reservations last year. The room was clean, had a more comfortable bed than the one in our Grant Village Lodge room, a heater that warmed up the room quickly (it was cold and snowing while we were there!) and a larger shower. There was also a Keurig coffee-maker in the room. The odd thing was that you entered the cabin by going through a locked gate where the cabin's hot tub was, which was surrounded by a tall, solid fence for privacy, then into a locked door directly into the cabin. But there was no way to enjoy the view of the surrounding terrain. I'd recommend getting a regular cabin instead, if you agree that that would've been nice. Otherwise, the cabin was fairly quiet. We ate at the snack bar the first night, which was so-so but filled our tummies, then at the restaurant for the next 3 mornings. The food was good and so was the service.

Room Tip: Pick a cabin rather than a hot tub cabin if you'd like a view

Green Features: They had a recycling bin in the room and encouraged guests to reuse their towels, which is as it should be.

At first I was a little disapointed with the location of the Frontier Cabins i.e. behind the main hotel building along a tatty, potholed road off a car park, but our cabin faced onto a sunny green area with a tree in the middle. The cabin had a covered porch with a small table and two chairs and we were able to park our car next to it making loading the car etc easy.
Inside the accomodation was roomy, basic but clean and had windows in both opposing walls which kept it light and airy.
May and early June is the time when Elk calve and we had an elk and calf that had taken over the cabins area resulting in some hazardous encounters and the need for a Ranger to be on hand to ensure the public and Elk are kept apart. I am not sure if this activity reduces as the calf gets older through the summer but on several occasions some young children in a nearby cabin were clearly terrified when the mother elk charged them. If you have young children it might be safer to stay in the main building. It wasn't only elk that stray into the cabins area we saw a bison wandering out and across the road one morning!
The hotel consisted of the main hotel building with reception and rooms, across the road was the dining room and a pizza cafe and the cabins to the rear. I wondered why the dining room building had not been built as part of the main building - it would have been more convenient.
Summing up - basic accomodation amongst the wildlife.

Room Tip: Choose a Frontier cabin with an open front aspect - at least you can watch the wildlife!

This hotel is cheaper than other accommodations in and around the park mostly due to the fact that you will have to share a bathroom with other guests. However, nobody was ever in the bathroom or the shower when we wanted to use it. (We went in June). The hotel was nicely located in an area that tends to be warmer in June than some of the locations farther south. The staff was extremely nice and the rooms comfortable. It does not have air conditioning but the windows do open and it has lots of vintage characteristics like push buttons for the lights. Mammoth is a nice area and if you go in June, you will most likely see baby Elk outside of your window and possibly a bear.

Mammoth a great venue and such a delight to be there to see the Great Horned owls fledging. Good wildlife and birding location. Cabins very cosy, with no storage space so lived out of a suitcase. But location and the porch with table and chairs more than made up for it. Good food, dinners and breakfast a high standard as was the service. Friendly bar staff.

Our cabin was a hot tub cabin, one of only four. If you can snag one I recommend doing so... The hot tub is in a privately fenced-in area in front of the cabin. The cabin itself had the typical set of amenities, including a Keurig coffee maker with a few k-cups. These aren't air conditioned but I doubt you really need it, they do give you a fan. Parking can get messy though... You can park right next to your cabin, assuming your neighbor doesn't grab it first. Seemed like there were more cabins than spaces. Be prepared to mingle with the elk, one was grazing right outside our door one morning. Mammoth Hot Springs is probably my favorite area of the park, there's a lot of amenities including a great Dining Hall and grill with many gluten-free options. One thing to note... There is a cell tower with good voice/text reception but our T-Mobile phones were on data roaming. There was wifi at one of the buildings for a fee. No TV either, aside from the dining hall bar, but who needs such things while in Yellowstone anyway? We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly be back.

We stayed in a cabin that faced onto a grassy area. All cabins seemed to have outdoor porches with chairs, absolutely lovely to sit outside! Especially when an elk wanders into the green!

Cabins were clean. Shower water pressure was good. Location is brilliant for Mammoth Hot Springs and for heading to Lamar Valley.

Probably my favourite place we stayed in the park.

When we went to Yellowstone in May 2014, we drove into a white out. Being from the southwest we didn't know what to do, where to go or how fast to get there. I called the hotel and told them that we were going to leave the park and the whiteout...and come to their hotel another time. The lady on the phone was WONDERFUL. She asked if we needed help and she refunded our deposit. She was refreshing and caring. I'm sure she is representative of the entire park system.
