I have stayed in Madison Campgrounds 6 times now over the last 8 years and will continue to in the future.

Its only a 15 minute drive to the town of West Yellowstone, Old Faithful and lots of other park features.
The staff is frendly and knowledgeable.
Its right on the banks of the Madison River with lots of very beautiful scenery!

Understand their are no showers at this campgrounds and reservations are a must!

My family went to Madison in the summer of 2012. It was in a great location. Very close to the town of West Yellowstone and Old Faithful. Some sights were a bit further, but living in NY, we went to go see them all. At first, we weren't so happy that there weren't showers, but we found a place down by the river where there are hot springs that you saw the bubbles coming out of the ground. They acted as a bath with our bathing suits. There were a lot of people there, but there was a decent amount of space. I would say to ask for a site on the end if you want space. We stayed in the G loop. The only problem were the nights. It went down to near to below zero at night, and we had lots of blankets. We were freezing, but it was still livable. The kids made friends and biked all around the ground. We went to a ranger program and it was great. Remember to get a Junior Ranger packet for the kids! They had so much fun with it. If you want firewood, don't buy it, just look for the wood around you. There are bison that walk around at night and one night, they were fighting across from our tent and knocked down a tree! They don't go near your tent though, so there wasn't anything to worry about. Also, look out for the Canadian Prarie Dogs! They are adorable and friendly. When you are eating, they surround you and nibble and jump around your feet. They let you get close to them too! Well, if you are going to stay at a campground, stay here.

Room Tip: -Use the ends of the loops for more space -G loop was excelent -Remember to bring bikes!

Madison Campground is a great family spot to visit Yellowstone National Park; located where the Firehole and Gibbon Rivers meet to form the Madison River. While the campground was designed some decades ago, the prime contractor (Xanterra) has done what the National Park Service allows to keep the place updated.

If you are looking for a camp site with full hookups, you will be disappointed. Madison is a dry camp only no on-site showers and very restrictive on generator hours. You can have fires in the fire rings provided for each site. The campground does offer two bathrooms per loop and a three lane dump and fill station (at the enterance). The campground does have very limited sites for the big RV's (>35') and only a couple for over 40'; book early and well in advance.

Madison usually fills up completely in June, July, and August; September can be hit or miss with RV sites. You can request specific sites; Xanterra will not guarantee this, but the earlier you make your reservation the Madison Staff will do their best to make it happen. Xanterra takes reservations upto a year or season in advance (that means their were reservations in for the 2013 season last April). If a member of your party has a physical disability or mobility issue there are three ADA complient campsites in A Loop. You can request these when making a reservation.

If you are a tenter, you want to be in H Loop, specifically sites 287 or 289. These sites are set back a bit from the pavement and are very nice. RV'ers you want what the staff calls the Ridge, most of these sites are part of E Loop numbers, E190 and up. Not all tent sites have pads, so if you need one or prefer a pad, ask first. Not all RV sites will have your RV door opening into your site either.

Be prepared for animal encounters within the campground. Every loop has ground squirrels throughout each site; they are affectionately called Whistle Pigs by the staff. Also in the spring and fall you could encounter elk and bison in your campsites. This can be dangerous and both the staff and National Park service do their best to manage these animals, but it's their home and you are the guest. Over the past two years, bear activity within the campground has been minimal. That being said, there has been a black bear that visits the camp frequently throughout the year; keep a clean camp!

We stayed at Madison Campground in October. While it was definately not as private as some campgrounds we have stayed at, it was clean and served the purpose. It did have a good location for us to get to several hikes nearby. It is Yellowstone and it's huge so plan on driving to get to some of the major sites or packing up camp often. The campground was louder and more populated but it quieted down at 10pm. We tent camped and while it was cold outside it was nice that the bathrooms had heaters. The flush toilets were also a plus! The bathrooms also had a little area that you could wash your dishes in. The faucet didn't work great but good enough to wash the dishes. It would be really nice if there were showers but the 20 minute drive to the Old Faithful Inn for showers was ok. It is nice that all the campgrounds are recycling but more recycling bins located throughout the campground would promote more compliance. It's hard to recycle items when you want to keep the smells away from camp but don't want to drive up to the recycling bins several times per day.

Stayed here Oct 9 and 10, 2012. Cold nights and sunny days. No hook ups at this location. However we could have a campfire which surprised me given how dry it is. It was a good central location for day trips around the park.

If you are looking for a fall camping trip, this is the place. They do not have showers or elcetricity but what they do have is the most fantastic scenery when you wake until you shut your eyses at night. The bathrooms are kept very clean and the it is one of the few places in the park you don't need a hardside trailer. A tent, a popup or an expensive RV whatever you have it works here. The ranger programs at the amphitheater are some of the best because you have the whole Madison Valley behind where the ranger is speaking. The River is just gorgeous and you never know what you may see in the river or along its banks.

I have stayed in the Madison campground 3 years in a row and plan on staying again this year (2012). The site is nicely situated most of the geyser basins, Old Faithful, and the town of West Yellowstone, all are within a 15 minute drive. Fly fishing, Bald Eagle sighting, Elk and Bison watching along the Madison River are great!
