This is a one way road that gives great views of the Firehole canyon and waterfall. There is a place where you can stop and swim. It wasn't overly crowded when we were there (mid afternoon). Views are great and it is definitely wroth the "detour" off the main road.

A wonderful Park ranger told us to take this drive as it was so a treat and it included a nice swimming hole. We did not know what to expect as it was not on my itinerary to explore, but we are so glad we did. The drive through the canyon was awesome! We did find the swimming hole too, which was great. It was almost too crowded but there seemed to be enough space for people to disappear down the river to not make it so congested. The water was clear, cool and very refreshing and you could wade in by the "rocky/sandy beach" or you could take a more daring path and climb over some rocks and slide in off a big rock jetty or try to swim to the opposite side and jump off the rocks. Either way, it was very nice and a big surprise for us.Even if you don't want to swim, picnics in this area are nice too.

We did this drive in the early evening and didn't have our swimsuits with us... :( Too bad because it looked like a lot of fun!
This road is on your right hand side as your heading to old faithful. It's a oneway loop and you will see the river on your right as you get close to the swimming area. There are trails down to the river (it's a bit steep) so wear good shoes going down. The hot springs meets the river here and you can soak in the warm water. There is apparently an undertow in the deeper water where people surf down the rapids so caution is advised when swimming here. There were a lot of people here so coming early in the day is probably best. Not much for a parking area.

After scouring Tripadvisor about Yellowstone this was on our to see list! It is a beautiful area, very scenic.

The kids were most excited about the chance to get in the water because none of the hotels in the park having swimming pools. I reassured them that when they got in there would be some "hot spots" to make it not so cold. Apparently all of the hot spots disappeared the day we were there. None of the other visitors that were there were able to locate them. The kids still had fun wading in the water and we let our oldest swim in to the deeper water as she is a strong swimmer. For younger children, follow the recommendations of bringing a life jacket. The current is very strong. You will also need water shoes as the rocks really hurt your feet.

This has become a popular spot on the park for visitors. We drove through earlier in the afternoon and it was so packed that we kept on driving and decided to come back in the early evening when people started leaving the park, even though there were lots of people enjoying the swimming hole.

My kids had a blast watching the chipmunks. They have no fear of humans and will come right up to you trying to get anything they think is food. We didn't have any snacks but is clear that other tourists have been routinely feeding them.
