I visited the Boiling River with six of my friends. It is a bit of a walk in but worth every step. You find a nice spot in the river where the boiling water meets the cold. This river is becoming very popular and when you experience it you will see why. After a long day of sightseeing it is wonderful to sit back and enjoy the sensation of two extreme temperatures. Finding the right spot is the challenge. The walk out is harder then the walk in after your body becomes so relaxed, it is hard to get up and leave. They close at sunset.

The park service doesn't really promote this spot, but it's fantastic. Enjoy one of the few spots in the park where you can swim. The boiling river enters the frigid Yellowstone river and you just find the perfect temperature and enjoy.

It was great to see where 90% of geothermally heated water goes to in Mammoth Hot Springs region. Kids and adults had fun checking out temperature differences as boiling river meets Gardiner river. Be careful not to step right into hot waters of Boiling River. Carry towels/bathing suit if you plan to take a dip into the pool of mixed waters from both boiling and Gardiner rivers. From Mammoth visitor ctr head north to Gardiner. Parking lot is on both sides of road. Its a 0.5 to 0.6 miles easy hike from parking lot along Gardiner river to get there. Allow about an hour (more if you just want to sit and relax in the pool). No services available here.

As natural as hot springs get, this location isn't marked but the trail is from the parking lot that is located just north of the montana/wyoming border between mammoth and gardiner.

When you visit Yellowstone or Gardiner the Boiling River is a must!!! Hot water from natural springs mixes with the icy river so you can choose your comfort zone. Can get crowded but on an August Saturday there was room for everyone. So relaxing! And the scenery is beautiful. I've been to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland but this was better and free!!! (With park admission.)
