Don't miss this! We had been to Yellowstone three times before we drove to here I don't know why it's a lovely drive off the beaten track

We have done this trip 3 times and loved it even more each time. We live most of the time in Europe and when friends ask for advise, we always say: If you can only visit one place in USA you go to Yellowstone and if you can only visit 1 state go to Utah:-)

Be prepared for this amazing drive. Several things to bear in mind: 1. You will not see everything. 2. Dress in layers in case the weather changes. 3. Wear walking shoes. 4. Carry water. 5. Take a sack lunch because where you are going there may not be food available. 6. The drive is longer than it appears! Now enjoy it and have a great time!

i think that this area is far from most park entrances and if you visit the place don't waste the time to climb the hill.
the only things to visit are close to the main road

This is main road going through yellowstone park. Its configuration 8 will take you past the main park areas lake, canyon, old faithful, norris, mammouth, roosevelt, and the valleys lemar and hayden. (not in that order).
The drive around the park is doable in a single day, however that would not leave much time to see more than just a few things. You would seriously need 4 days to get any appriciation for this incredible place. There are simply just too many things to see and do.
The grand loop has been the way people have toured the park from its start. from the early stage coach days folks would disembark from the railroad by the north entrence and board stage coaches to tour the park. Hotels were put up at points where it would take one day touring to get to. This is where you will find the activity places and hotels today.
The drive along the grand loop will take you up to 9,000 ft elevation and back down to 5,000 ft. It can be raining in one area and snowing in another all in the same day Wild life can be spotted anywhere in the park and yes even on the road your traveling on!! Be sure to keep a close lookout for parked cars along the roadside. Dont be afraid to ask what they are looking at. Chances are they may see something interesting you missed.
Wile doing day drives, its a good idea to take a small cooler with drinks and snacks. services can be almost an hour or two from each other. A good pair of binoculars is recommended for wildlife viewing. the open meadows are huge and animals can be hard to spot in them.Even if you see one not so far away, its not a good idea to approach one. These animals are wild , they can and will get aggressive if they feel threatend. They only seem tame that is because they have got used the people being around and are not hunted. that does not mean its safe to get near them. So please view from a distance .
There is so much beauty here to see and this road helps get you up close. There are lots off pullouts all throughout the drive so those lingering onlookers , Please pull over and let those behind you pass by. For you speed racers out there who want to drive over the speed limit , can you do it without tailgating me? Or for safety sake of your fellow travelers and the parks free roaming wild life Do it elce where!!
My top picks for the road----Lemar valley for wild life viewing, Old faithful for geysers and restaurants, shops and trails. Mammoth for the hot spring terraces and elk, canyon area for best waterfalls midway geyser basin for best colors, firehole river drive best side road drive.
The best way to explore the grand loop road is to do it sections . Think of it as a marathon race (not a sprint) go at your own pace, stop and see the things you are interested in,Try to be a little open to where you are and let the unexpected happen. This is a place where dreams can and do come true. enjoy.....................
