Owner description: The perfect spot to view Old Faithful from a distance.

A short, easy walk around and behind Old Faithful, then up a hill gets you to Observation point. Here, you can look out over some of the geyser basin and watch O.F. erupt. Most of the crowds at Old Faithful make their way up the hill, so this area is usually packed as well.

Fair warning: this is a short, easy walk by Yellowstone standards. So be prepared to spend an hour or so walking, and to gain around 100ft.

My family with two kids stumbled upon the trail head when visiting the old faithful area and decided to check it out, unprepared for the hour + hike thinking that it wouldn't be a big deal so close to a dense tourist attraction (no h2o, hats). It was a bit more than we anticipated, especially without proper preparation. The actual hike took about an hour, the longest part of course being the way up. The hike up is quite steep in places. My kids and husband flew up with ease but I've been a little out of shape and lagged behind a bit and was breathing and sweating hard by the top. There were only about 15 people at the top and what a spectacular view! We were grateful to see o.f. for the first time this way. The hike was well worth it, I would just recommend not making the same mistake and being prepared to make it more enjoyable.

I read reviews where people thought that Old Faithful was too commercial an area with too many buses & crowds. If you want a less crowded view & don't mind a nice walk in the woods, then this is the way to see it! There is an elevation gain that is about 100-150' or so. We enjoy making the hike to the point and watching the geyser go off- also keeping an eye out for other geysers erupting in this basin- then hiking back down the loop to see Solitary geyser erupt(it hiccups. & splashes) on Thr way back to the boardwalk

This hike is just for one hour - you have to climb a way up but it's well wort the view.

When you visit Old Faithful in July you have to be prepared for the masses. We could barely find a place to sit to observe the eruption and the inn was shoulder to shoulder through the lobby and gift shops. Not so when you climb to observation point. There were less than 20 people at solitary geyser and waiting for Old Faithful's eruption. It's a short steep climb that gives some gorgeous perspective on Old Faithful and the surrounding area.
