“Good food, fun fo kids - nice experience”

Old West Dinner Cookout

OK you do not need to get there a full hour before you leave but you will miss a charming storyteller if you get there late. We were told to arrive at 3:45 - just pushed back an hour to adjust for shorter August days. Family of four with two young kids - we are from the Northeast so this was a unique experience for us and we loved it. Worried that it might be overly cheesy but it wasn't. Food was good - steak, roosevelt beans (delicious), apple crisp, potato salad, corn muffins, corn and cowboy coffee (which I did not love). Our guide for the wagon ride was Justin and he was so likable and funny - the staff all around was a great fit. We really enjoyed our evening. You eat dinner in Pleasant Valley and get to see more of Yellowstone - saw Pronghorn Sheep and Bison on the way to the dinner. Not cheap $216. for a family of four still a great evening and a good meal.

A disappointment. I wasn't expecting five star cuisine here, but the food was nasty. And the ride to get to the cookout area was extremely dusty so expect a mouthfull of dirt when you get there.

The kids liked it more than the adults, but everyone was very nice. The food was good and there was plenty. Park at the corral and not the lodge. They told some great stories about the park, which made the almost 60 minute wait for the horses to be ready much better.

We loved taking the horses out to a stunningly beautiful valley and then having this outdoors event, complete with cowboys singing and cooking and horses and STEAK! It was wonderful!

We took the family (including our two girls 12 and 14) on this wagon train dinner trip. It is pricey, but what a great evening. I would imagine it is even better when not a full trip - but we went in July so we knew it would be crowded. Our drivers were fun and let the kids take turns driving the horses. The area is so dry that the ride there and back was very, very dusty so be prepared for a layer of dust on everything you have on! The valley area where we ate was beautiful. There was entertainment during dinner (a cowboy singer/story teller) and dinner was very good. Steak, cowboy beans, corn bread, cobbler, watermelon and more. They did a fire and made cowboy coffee in big black pots that was strong and good. It was a great way for the kids to just run off their energy. My youngest ran through the meadow checking out the wild flowers, petting the horses, etc. The staff was friendly and shared many stories about their summer work at Yellowstone. It was a nice evening. I don't know that we would do it again, but definitely worth doing once. One note - we were staying in the Madison area so our ride back through the mountain pass was beautiful and made me a little anxious as we knew that there would be more wildlife out. Sure enough we saw a black bear, a bison and a coyote who thought it was fun to walk in the middle of the road and not let any cars pass him for about a mile.
