“What to do at the Copper River Princess Lodge”
Reviewed September 18, 2006

Took a land tour with Princess; after spending 2 nights at the Denali Lodge (if you take a tour into Denali Natl Park, take the TUNDRA tour, much longer, but you go much further into the park as opposed to the Natl History Tour and see so much more!). We were transported via bus across the Old Denali Hwy to Copper River Lodge. It was confusing to decide ahead of time what to do as far as excursions, but since we had rainy weather, this is what I would suggest, even if it is sunny: Take the courtesy Princess bus to the Natl Park Visitor center and spend the whole day there....great film, ranger walk, etc.....all free. Very little to see or do in the immediate area, this is a WILDNERNESS Natl Park.....we did a jet boat ride excursion but overall very expensive for what we saw and did. There are trails to take at the visitor center as well. Also at the lodge, there are is an easy trail to walk by yourself (bears spotted in the area). Lodge itself very nice, staff great...no other cruise co. has accomodations in Copper River area. The most enjoyable movie to see at the Natl Park Visitor center was a film about One Man Wilderness or something like that, about an hour, MUST SEE....many of us watched this film mesmermized by this incredible man and his adventure.

We spent two nights in July 2006 at the Copper River Princess Lodge. The hotel is simply beautiful, the rooms were of moderate size for a room with 2 double beds, and the staff were everywhere, and always helpful and cheerful.

A couple of giveaways about the clientelle you are likely to see - the alarm clock have 6-inch high numerals, and in the hotel book, they tell you if there is a fire, of course get out, but if you have time, take your medications with you. Although there were also a fair number of children there, something you don't see a lot of in Alaska (from the tourists, I mean).

Also, we had a coupon from the Alaska TourSaver, so it's pay for the first night, second night is free. The Copper River Princess also in the Alaska Northern Lights Coupon book, as were the McKinley Princess and Kenai Princess (but not the Denali Princess or Fairbanks Princess). Sometimes it's hard to get two consecutive nights of availability, but it's worth looking into, especially if you can book ahead, or are in the shoulder season.

We stayed here one night on July 27. Awesome property...beautiful views and professional staff. The rooms were just beautiful and well-appointed with high ceilings and a ceiling fan also. This is the newest Princess property I'm told.......not a whole lot to do here...one or two days is enough to see the Alaska Pipeline and do some fishing, ATV riding or horseback riding. There is a rushing river alongside the property's borders and beautiful wildflowers everywhere you look.

The food was amazing and they have a kids menu too. My son got violently ill and ran to the mens room while we were at dinner. Our waiter was so concerned that he kept coming back to ask if he was okay and even took it upon himself to get my son some ginger ale. This employee deserves kudos and I let his manager know it too!

The lobby is so relaxing...we chatted with other couples and met some wonderful folks that we could share our Alaska experiences with.

I highly recommend this property....you wont be disappointed~

  • Liked — the lobby and rooms were well appointed
  • Disliked — front desk staff could be more knowledgeable about tour desk...got different answers
  • Tips/Secrets — the ATV and Dog Sledding is a blast!!!!!!!!!

I have stayed at the Wilderness Princess 2 years in a row and it is the nicest lodging in the Copper River Valley area. Very helpful and friendly staff. Beautiful views and grounds. Good food and drink. Rooms above average and clean but your standard hotel room. Convenient location to area activities

Drawbacks only minor. Only two computers for guest access which were often busy. Really only 5 tv channels available.....but have satellite access ? Can get crowded when a couple Princess Tour buses come in.

Couple hot tubs would be nice to relax in after a day of fishing. trailing riding on the ATV, or just touring the area.

Don't stay here if you are looking for a more rustic Alaskan experience.

We spent two nights here and enjoyed our stay very much. They have a view of the pipeline when you take the nature walk (you actually drive over the buried pipeline when you approach their property). The lodge has a fantastic view of the mountains -- sadly during our stay the mtns stayed hidden in the fog and clouds.

Staff was helpful -- suggested a nice drive down to Chitina -- with a stop at Liberty Falls. We had dinner at the fine restaurant, yes the prices were fine dining prices but considering the remoteness of this property, I thought quite reasonable -- and the portions were generous. For breakfast we chose to go the Copper Center Lodge -- portions were gigantic -- Sourdough Pancakes -- really sour -- French Toast - amazing. Be sure to check out the river behind the property -- it is a really fast current.

We stayed at this lodge in July of 2005. The common areas were very nice and the rooms were spacious. It has wi-fi internet as well as 2 public computers. There are 2 restaurants at the lodge. We only ate at the pub style one because the fine dining place was quite expensive. The food and the service were great. The grounds have some limited trails to the Copper River. Overall, the grounds are very well maintained and beautiful. There is a shuttle that will take you to "town" (it's really small) and also to the Wrangell-St.Elias National Park. We ate at a small restaurant in town and it was excellent. I think it was called "The Roadhouse Inn". This lodge was much better than Princess Denali, where we also stayed. I also was more impressed with Wrangell-St.Elias than I was with Denali.

The Copper River Princess Lodge was our first stop after a wonderful cruise on the Sun Princess. The lodge is beautiful, with a huge great room, complete with fire place, books to read, and games to play. It seemed to encourage friendly conversations and lazing around the fire, etc. Guest rooms were large, clean and comfortable, continuing the ambience of the lodge. Staff was attentive, service was very good, and we would certainly stay here again.

Our main frustration was not with the hotel, but rather that the Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Kennicott Copper Mine were so inaccessible to those of us who don't camp out or hike for hours.
