We had a fantastic private tour from Mark. He was very knowledgable of the sanctuary and the history of the area. We would highly recommend a private tour. Request that Mark be your guide.

I found the sanctuary through a random google search, then checked out their website. Liking the idea that all proceeds stay within the sanctuary, I booked a 3 hour tour for my husband and me. It seems a bit expensive ($150/person), it is more than worth the private tour in a 4x4 vehicle and air conditioning in the SD summer. Carla was our guide, we had the vehicle to ourselves, and it was one of the most amazing experiences. Carla was awesome, told us the history of the sanctuary and the horses. What really made the experience wonderful was Carla's connection with the horses, getting out of the vehicle and literally becoming part of the herd, letting the horses approach you and truly give you a hug. Carla kept an eye on the horses of course, and we didn't feel unsafe at any time. So, if you are able, get the private tour and go meet Angel, Arizona, Moonbeam, Silver Bell and the hundreds of other horses at the sanctuary! Don't forget to wear good closed shoes and bring water!

We would've loved to have taken the private tour, but at $60 a pop for adults we just flat out couldn't afford to work that in. We wished we could've because the money goes for a great cause and we loved their philosophy. The kids tickets are much more reasonable at $7. I wish they would make the prices something like $25 for adults. I guarantee they would get more business. We did have ice cream and bought some gifts in the gift shop. The kids got to feed a baby horse it's bottle which was a cool experience for them.

i travelled to south dakota and loved every experience i had there...except the entire day spent at the wild horse sanctuary. i had so looked forward to seeing wild mustangs and all the promised photography opportunities. my daughter loves to take pics and i wanted to go for her. after an hour and a half drive there, and paying close to $100, we loaded onto a dirty hot bus with 20 other people and road around the land for 2 hours. we actually drove up to the horses. my daughter walked up to and petted the "wild" mustang. if you have seen a horse up close anytime in your life you have already visited the wild horse sanctuary. it is the only bad experience i had in south dakota. i regret wasting half a day doing this.
