Although this might be a little out of the way, it is quite worth it. The tour was amazing, detailed and educational (but not in the boring way). Children and adults alike will be facinated by this place.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of your most recent visit. We may seem out of the way, but that depends on where you went or were going, as we are located right in the City of Hot Springs, in the southern Black Hills. Thanks again for your review and come see us again.

“Travel Back to Ice Age”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

We could not believe that we found this gem along our route from Rapid City to Denver. What a treat! In here, you get a witness of history more than 26,000 year ago. It is also an education – we’d never know that it was a sink hole that trapped the mammoths and other animals to their death. Since its discovery in 1974, it has been a working site, a museum and a classroom for volunteers and students alike. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. We were so glad of our own discover of this place.

“Exceeded all expectations!”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

I have visited the site multiple times. It is simply amazing. Incredible excavations in a climate-controlled environment, and you can get up close. Parking is ample, the building is open all year, and is great to visit any time, even when hot or cold. Excellent staff, with great tour guides. A learning experience for all. Great for kids and adults. Restaurants and lodging nearby. Bottom line: this alone makes a trip to Hot Springs worthwhile.

Thanks for your continued patronage and for writing the review. We do take pride in our staff and the training that they go through. I agree we try to make all ages lifetime learners and help them appreciate what the area looked like and the animals that lived year long ago. We are the #1 reason that people stop in Hot Springs, next time take the time to visit the other attractions and enjoy the architecture and the river walk.

“For Fossil Lovers of All Ages”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

I love fossils, and mammoths have been my favorites since childhood. So, I couldn't possibly miss the chance to visit the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs in September, 2012 when I vacationed in western South Dakota. It's Mammoth Central, reputed to be the largest mammoth dig and research facility in the world. I enjoyed every moment of my tour of the facility. There is no better place to see these ancient creatures. Trapped in a sinkhole thousands of years ago, sixty mammoths have been discovered to date at this one site, along with many other species of animals, plants and insects. The tour guide described the many freshly dug-up fossils and was very knowledgeable about their preparation and the research undertaken at the facility.

Thanks for your love of fossils and especially mammoths. We take pride in educating those that attend and we attempt to add to that with our website, although a visit in person is much better and you have the change to interact with our wonderful staff.

Thanks for taking of your valuable time to write your review!
