“another lovely dinner”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

We are regulars at Nectar and our most recent visit didn't disappoint. What I like most about Julie Francis' food is the interesting combination of flavors that creates sophisticated but not overly busy or fussy food. It is just so good. Tonight was local poached asparagus with crab salad finished with a light dijon and pesto 'sauce', freekeh (a middle eastern grain) with sauteed leeks, mushrooms and sorrel sauces, a chilled eggplant soup and a lightly spiced masala fruit salad with carrots and pineapple sorbet. I don't know why this restaurant doesn't get higher ratings for food because it is some of the most delightful cuisine in Cincinnati. The service can be uneven, and this seems to upset a lot of people. And the wine list is limited. This aside I always look forward to eating here. Go Julie!

“Great local food, service needs attention”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

We had a lovely meal with friends at Nectar the other night. As always, the food was excellent. We like the fact that Julie sources local ingredients for all her dishes. She takes great care with her food and this comes through in the taste sensations.

The menu has a few new additions. I tried (and enjoyed) the veal sweetbreads - they really challenged my tastebuds (which is what I expect at a good restaurant).

Unfortunately, the service was very poor. Our waitron did not know much about the dishes and virtually threw the plates onto the table. She seemed very young and I assume she is quite inexperienced. However, as other reviewers have commented, this aspect of Nectar really needs attention.

In spite of the service issues, we will always support Nectar. It is a small restaurant, lovingly presided over by Julie. She deserves the support of the community in attempting to provide good food using locally sourced ingredients.

“So many better options elsewhere”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

This restaurant was unimpressive from the start. Greeting was poor and delayed. Wait to get a drink was no less than 15 minutes. The food was mediocre for the price. The server was very nice and was the only saving grace to our experience, but the experience was poor none the less. Given the menu and quality that we have experienced, I doubt that we will give this restaurant another chance.

“Always a good option”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2012

We have patronized Nectar for many years but I have never written a review. It's about time. Nectar has many good and unique things about it. The chef cares deeply about her food, quality, presentation and keeping things local. This bodes well for the more discerning diner. The food style can be characterized as eclectic contemporary, sometimes also including modern variations on traditional dishes. It is always the best quality.

In the years we have been going to Nectar we have occasionally had dishes in which the flavors didn't quite mesh, but on the whole it is well-prepared and appetizing food. Certainly a good bet for those who want a step up in their dining experience. Ambiance in the restaurant is wonderful - warm color tones and very cozy and inviting.

Three further points: wine list is limited and often out of date in terms of what is available (a draw back for us because we love good food and wine parings), and the service can be slow. Finally, this is not a cheap restaurant. However, for those who want good quality and caring, creatively prepared food it is worth it.

“A Creative Chef at her Best”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

As part of a party of 12 we had dinner here on a Friday night and had a wonderful experience. Chef Julie keeps her menu small but ever changing depending on what is locally available. Our party tried about all the entree items on the menu and everyone was happy with their choice whether it had an Indian, Italian or Moroccan influence. The butternut squash soup was outstanding. Two items that need to be mentioned are that the kitchen is small so service can be a little slow and portions are not large but if you want a leisurely paced outstanding meal Nectar is the place.
