“Beautiful view of river”
Review of Immaculata Church

Immaculata Church
Reviewed February 23, 2012

This is the church at the top of the prayer steps. Each Good Friday, I pray the steps up to Immaculata. Pretty little church in a historic neighborhood.

This beautiful Catholic church is located on Guido Street in the Mt. Adams neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. It was built in 1859 and is listed in the National Register Of Historic Places. There are many facts regarding the story of this church. Too many to mention here, so I am just trying to hit the highlights.
It sits high atop a hill and provides a great picture/postcard view of the Ohio River and several Northern Kentucky neighborhoods across the river.
On Good Fridays, there is a pilgrimage where folks ascend 85 steps leading up to the church, and in February they remove the statue of Saint Patrick and carried it through the streets of Mt. Adams as bagpipes play.
When we visited, we were walking around the outside of the church (which is lovely in and of itself) but we really wanted to see inside. We thought the church doors were locked, however, I found a side door where we could enter. The interior was awe-inspiring to say the least. You find yourself whispering because you want to be respectful while taking in this intimate place. It sort of gives you the chills... but in a good way. We were so glad that we were able to enjoy this enlightening experience together.
While in the Mt. Adams area, you might also want to visit Eden Park which is very close to the church. It is a beautiful, hill-top park that has a playhouse, a museum and a restaurant. Mt. Adams is a high class, artsey area of Cincinnati and there are numerous bars and restaurants that you can visit at night as well. Seeing this church and the Mt. Adams area should definately be on your list of things to do in Cincinnati.
