Running a marathon is a fantastic experience. Months of training make what at first seems an unattainable goal achievable. It is an accomplishment no matter where you run. Yet some places are more pleasant than others. The Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati is among the best. Cincinnati and its citizens have embraced the first weekend in May as Marathon Weekend. The city goes "all out" to welcome runners and their families. There are many activities, not just the 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon. Enjoy the Expo, children's runs, carb loading dinner, restaurants, theatre, museums and all of the amenities of this fair city. Cincinnati will embrace you.
For the marathon itself, the course is interesting and the crowds very supportive. There are water and Gatorade stations at every mile and music at every mile. Enthusiastic neighborhoods encourage you and offer you orange slices, bananas, apple slices, candy and in some places beer and wine. This year, in response to the tragedy in Boston, security was conspicuously increased. At the finish line, you are greeted by marathon officials and are awarded an impressive medal.
If you have thought about running a marathon in a mid sized city, this is one of the best. Fly the Pig.
