“Good Brunch”

I had a delicious Saturday brunch at Poco a Poco in Hyde Park. The food was moderately creative and tasty after a night out on the town. The portion of Huevos Purgatorio (eggs, ranchero sauce, potatoes) was a nice size and enough to get the day going. The Trout Benedict was also tasty with a correctly cooked egg, a good portion of trout in a good sauce.

The atmosphere looked to be trying for primarily a moderately up-scale setting but not too fancy. I would be willing to try this place for dinner when I was in the area.

“Great brunch, mediocre dinner”

I've been to Poco a Poco twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. For dinner, I was underwhelmed. The food was hit or miss. I loved the steamed mussels and the pescado tacos. The calamari was a bit overcooked and the chorizo mac and cheese had something missing - chorizo. It was fairly bland. I expected more from the food. The wine list is nice, but, I believe, the least expensive bottle is still around $50. They really should have a lower-tier option available.

Brunch, on the other hand, was fantastic. I went with four girlfriends and we each tried something different. I had the Latin Benedict, which was fabulous and I substituted chorizo for the ham and it was delicious with the perfect level of spice. Two friends had the cornmeal pancakes and they were thin, crispy, light, and delicious! The strata was also fabulous, but my favorite dish was the corn cake and egg that a friend ordered. It was really amazing! Spicy, but not too much, had a perfectly cooked egg right on top and was just delicious. Another great thing about Poco a Poco for brunch is the bottomless mimosa option for $14… Kinda pricey, but if you have nothing to do on Sunday afternoon and nowhere to drive, I recommend it!

“More like (expensive) bar food than tapas.”

Poco a Poco doesn't seem to know what kind of restaurant it wants to be. Parts of the restaurant suggest it fancies itself an upscale destination with stylish decorations -- other areas seem downscale like a neighborhood bar. (low ceiling, hard surfaces that echo the noise, sticky tables) The food suffers from similar problems -- billed and priced as tapas, but really closer to bar food. The menu leans toward fried foods, and most items are served with oily sauces and dips. We have dined here twice; most recently we tried six items: Calamari (fried and served with garlic aioli); taquitos (not bad, but also served with a side of oil); mini crabcakes served with -- you guessed it -- oil. Camarones (aka Shrimp) -- virtually the only "traditional" tapas item on the menu - tasted good and wasn't too greasy; but even Charred Corn was drenched with heavy oil. The salad was fresh and tasty. Too much emphasis on heavy, fatty preparations and garnishes. On a happier note, the sparkling sangria tasted good. The grease fest set us back $100, including tax & tip, and exactly 2 glasses of sangria. The place was deserted; perhaps if the prices weren't so steep, people might be more included to pop in for a few snacks and beers?
