I'm sure Walla Walla is gorgeous in the summer, but it sure was fun in the winter. We took advantage of a great deal to stay at the Fat Duck, run by Rich and Cynthia Koby. Traffic is light in the winter, so we essentially had the house to ourselves. The house is a pleasant bungalo/crafstmen just a handful of blocks from downtown. In the summer, it would have been an easy walk, but we chose to drive in when it was in the 30s! Breakfasts were made by Rich, and man were they delicious. It's hard to please a Portland foodie, but Rich's frittata with mama lil's peppers, goat cheese, and potatoes was killer; his chocolate muffin and his marionberry muffin were equally tasty. We were definitely fortified to face the winter chill and go out and enjoy the wine and the scenery. The other thing about Walla Walla in winter is that you have everyone's attention. This was confided to me by several tasting room pourers and restaurant servers. We were able to make same-day reservations at Brasserie 4 and Saffron--two of the top restaurants there...apparently that would never happen in the summer. The best thing though was that once inside of these establishment, we were able to have long and fun conversations with most everyone. I truly think we got a great Walla Walla experience, so consider going in the winter. Whenever you go, stay at the Fat Duck Inn...for sure. I haven't mentioned Cynthia, but she was a lovely hostess, and my girlfriend and I had a great time making plans with her--over an arrival glass of wine or one of Rich's great breakfasts.

We just got back from a weekend stay. The rooms were very nice and we were made to feel right at home. Rich & Cynthia are great hosts and serve a great breakfast. It was our first visit to Walla Walla and they gave us lots of local information that we could have never gotten if we stayed at a regular hotel. It really helped to make our trip fantastic. The house located an easy walk to downtown. We will definitely will be back.

We just returned from a 3 night stay at the Fat Duck Inn. Cynthia and Rich are delightful hosts and infused us with their local knowledge of food and wine each morning, in addition to a sumptuous breakfast, before we set out each day. The Inn is conveniently located to the downtown core with restaurants, wineries and shopping. Each night after exploring the valley we would walk to any number of restaurants. Three nights was way too short. We can't wait to come back and enjoy one of the Inn's special dinners. Thanks again for a great stay.

We totally enjoyed our 4 night stay last month. Rich and Cynthia are marvelous hosts and serve a wonderful breakfast. The Pintail Suite was luxurious-loved the separate tub and shower. They advised us on restaurants and gave us route maps to the wineries. Even gave us the route to bicycle to the winery area which was only about 9 miles away from the Fat Duck. We would definitely stay again if we return to Walla Walla. Superb place.

Room Tip: If you want quiet and easy access, the Pintail is worth the extra money. Bedroom with large sitting area, luxurious bath, large walk-in closet.

Whether you are attending a Parents Weekend, Orientation, or other events at Whitman University, or staying in Walla Walla to sample their many wines the Fat Duck Inn is the best place to stay. The amenities are great, located in a quiet neighborhood within an easy walking distance to the University, or the downtown tasting rooms, restaurants and shopping. Chef Rich is very accommodating to special dietary needs, and provides an outstanding breakfast! He also has very accurate wine recommendations to stimulate your tasting palate! Will make an effort to return to the Fat Duck Inn soon!

Room Tip: All the rooms are well laid out.
