Owner description: This National Historic Site marks the location of the Waiilatpu Mission, a Presbyterian mission ministering to the Cayuse Indians from 1836 to 1847. The mission, a way station for Oregon Trail pioneers, ended tragically with the killing of missionaries by the Cayuse.

Nice facilities with historical interest. Be prepared to do a little uphill walking if you want to see the hilltop memorial.

What a story about the Whitmans and early settlers of Walla Walla. The Whitman Mission gives a real and tragic account of their story. I won't give away what transpired. Enjoy the grounds and hike up to the top of the hill.

This is a must stop for families, couples, or even a quiet moment on your own. Twice we have brought a basket of wine, fruit and cheese to sit out on the site and enjoy a picnic in the shade of the fruit trees. The history is interesting and you can still see the ruts from the original Oregon Trail. Close enough to town if you are staying and visiting.

This is a National Park site but there is no entrance fee. The outdoor area is well-maintained and peaceful. None of the buildings remain but there is a path with audio descriptions of the location and use of various sites. Also, how often does one get to walk along a part of the original Oregon Trail? This mission served as a way station for travellers in the 1840's which created great concern for the local natives as their lands were compromised. For lovers of western history, this is a good stop.
