“Very friendly staff with great lake views!”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

Enjoyed the lake views from our room - be sure to buy some Deet Mosquito Spray! Blueberry pancakes with more blueberries than cake were fantastic! Staff worked around clock to sandbag for flood waters, but made us comfortable our entire week's stay! Beds very comfortable with nice shower, too. When ready to check out, desk staff was so helpful to print boarding passes for us - waitresses in restaurant were prompt with our food. Ate in bar area and enjoyed lake views from there, too. Close to Voyageur's National Park, Sha-Sha's and Island View. Nice scenic drive along lake. We would recommend this lodge to those who wish to get away from city. We came to fish, not swim or work-out in fitness room, so really enjoyed this lodge. Your work-out is reeling in the fish we caught - 23 and 18" walleyes & northern pike!

Room Tip: If you need an elevator to second floor, stay in cabin or on first floor, although not many stairs t...

I start this review with the mantra: "You get what you pay for." With the Thunderbird, what you're mainly paying for is the view/location. It is very close to Voyageurs National Park, and is right on Rainy Lake, so the views are lovely. Yes, the lodge itself is "tired", as many others have said. Noise carries easily between rooms and from the outside deck. In spite of this, I still say that we got our money's worth. You can't beat the views/location, the beds were comfortable, the porch is a great place to sit and read or use the wi-fi, and the room even had a mini-fridge and mini-microwave, which were pleasant surprises for me. I would likely stay here again if I were in the area: being on the lake sure beats being in town (International Falls)!

Room Tip: Room 205 has twin beds and a great view of Rainy Lake.

We stayed here in January 2014 with members of my son's hockey team. The place is dirty and dated (nothing like in the pictures on their website, as it appears we are missing furniture), our rooms did not have the 2 queen beds as per our confirmation letter, there was a weird buzzing sound cycling on-off allllll day and night, there wasn't any water (hot or cold) one morning, and the entire 3rd floor did not have housekeeping service the entire weekend - when it was mentioned to them, all we got were excuses when instead we should have received sincere apologies or a discount. I made it really easy for them by leaving my garbage bins and two used towels outside my door and still nothing. The food in the restaurant was good but the service was inconsistent - thanks for bringing us our bread basket AFTER our meal. I'd look elsewhere, even in the summer, before considering a stay here again.

We have our favorite choices, mine is the walleye almondine, our son's is the filet mignon - he claims it is better than the one I grill at home. The wait staff will anticipate preferences for regulars. The view is one of the best on the lake, and ever changing with the seasons.

We decided to celebrate Mothers Day in International Falls - a halfway point for us coming almost from the Northwestern Corner of Minnesota and our daughter coming from close to Duluth. It was a beautiful day for a drive and made the more so at our arrival at Thunderbird Lodge. My wife and I made ourselves comfortable on the front porch, sitting in the full sun, as we waited for our daughter to arrive.

First staff member we met was a very friendly fishing guide. We had a great visit chatting about places he and we had traveled to. The staff in the dinng room were equally pleasant, and the food was superb. We three enoyed the Walleye Almondine which was done to perfection, and our desserts were equally good. The views of Rainy Lake were stunning - we took many, many pictures. Prices were in keeping with any top notch restaurant. WE WILL CERTAINLY BE GOING BACK!

Room Tip: We had made a reservation, which I would highly recommend for anyone especially on busy holidays and...

Thunderbird Lodge is a Full Service Resort offering lodging accommodations - both rooms and cabins, fishing, snowmobiling and a Marina, and a Dining Room and Lounge with services for Banquets & Group Meetings. It is in a beautiful yet convenient spot on Rainy Lake with plenty of acreage and shoreline. 10 miles outside of downtown International Falls on Hwy 11 East. If you plan to spend time on the lake, don't spend it at a hotel or motel in town, come here and experience life Up North. This place has the peace and serenity people miss out on living in a city. I highly recommend renting a cabin for a week or more, get the whole family together and "unplug" from life. If you don't want to grill or BBQ, there is a full service bar and restaurant in the Lodge with yummy meals and great views. Staff is accommodating with any special needs. Book in advance, this place is a hot spot for seasonal fishing trips.

Room Tip: Choose a cabin furthest away from the lodge for maximum peace and quiet, then enjoy the nature surro...

We chose to stay here due to the proximitry to Voyageurs National Park. Dated furnishings, noisy room but nice lake views. The attatched restraunt had large menu, good food and service although somewhat pricey.

Room Tip: Don't book the room nearest the front desk. It is directly across from the room used for weddin...
