“Simply Awful”

My family stayed in Cottage #26 at Cedar Grove Mansion Inn for one night and my wife's comment after breakfast was, "we can't leave here fast enough!" The pictures online look fantastic, but the property itself is not even close to the quality shown in the pictures. It seems like the place was really nice about 15 years ago, but nothing has been repaired in at least that long. There were knobs missing on our dresser, the carpets were abysmal, the back porch had cigarettes and an unfinished diet coke on the table, the bathroom sink was falling apart, and there was a set of dim stairs and doorway to the downstairs portion of the cottage that was poorly blocked off with furniture. We have no idea what was downstairs - pretty spooky. We heard the trains and police sirens all night long. We hoped for a redeeming breakfast experience, but it was pitiful! No menu - just some bad coffee, a brick of scrambled eggs, sausage, a biscuit and grits. Not quite the B&B experience we expected. WAY overpriced, probably beautiful 20 years ago, and a far cry from the southern hospitality I know and love. We'll gladly NEVER stay here again.

We chose Cedar Grove as this seemed to us the place was not to be missed in Vicksburg as part of our road trip in the Deep South.

The house is indeed really nice, extremly well furnished & full of history. We were given a paper description to tour the house on our own after a welcome drink. This was much appreciated.

We only were disappointed because one of our room had no direct window (we missed that when reading the website) and we had no help in bringing our luggages up the steep stairs. We are young so this was not a problem but for our parents this would have been just impossible without our help.

Dinner in the restaurant was really good and our waitress was really friendly.

This is overall a really nice experience, not as nice as we were expecting when booking it, but this house is probably one of the nicest antebellum houses in Vicksburg.

Room Tip: Do not take rooms on the last floor if you have struggle with steep stairs.

First of all, I would say read all the reviews...before you book a room...Then decide for yourself.
We stayed at the Centennial Suite. The photos of the suites are gorgeous but ... the rooms are detached and away from the main house.
The parking area for the suites is not well lit. A single 60 watt bulb for 2000sf lot.
The "very" narrow stairs to our Suite, had broken treads and risers that had dangerous tripping hazards. The stairs were not well lit. We had to carry our luggage up these "dangerous stairs" past an unlit 2nd floor to our Suite on the 3rd floor.
The actual layout of the Centennial Suite is very nice, but the craftmanship is terrible.
The chocolate covered strawberries were not fresh.
The room was not cleaned after our Tuesday night stay.
The food at the restaurant was even close to what I was expecting based on the reviews or from a B&B of this "stature".
We blew off our Wednesday breakfast and ate at Cracker Barrel instead.
Do not spend your money on the Get-Away packages. They are not worth the extra that you pay for them.
Do not spend your money on this B&B, go instead to the Coutyard, Hampton or La Quinta.

Room Tip: Train Noise is unavoidable ... the tracks are within 100 yards of the front of the hotel. The area...

Stayed here 2 nights during a bike trip along the Natchez Trace. It' a beautiful old property that is showing it's age in some places. The group was in the Carriage House. The suites all had a similar layout but each were uniquely furnished with period pieces. I stayed in Prissie's Suite and loved it even though it was far from perfect. The bathroom in particular was dated and had some issues but still perfectly functional. In some ways those are the kinds of things that add character to places like this. They're not totally predictable and that's part of the charm. We peaked in some of the rooms in the main building that weren't occupied and those seemed to be more polished and upscale then those in the Carriage House.

The website gives a misleading view of this property. It is in need of considerable maintenance. Our room had no basin plug, mould on the bath tiles, curtain linings were in shreds. Altogether a very gloomy room. Breakfast was appalling. The three items of hot food were kept on a hotplate, but underneath the air conditioning so the food was cold! Apart from this there was just a bowl of fresh fruit and pots of yogurt- apparently this was a Souther Breakfast!!
We were due to stay 4 nights but checked out after only one.we have stayed in many Bed & Breakfasts in the USA and this must rank as the worst.

Part of the charm of this beautiful mansion is the original condition of so much of the building. The place is a bit rundown, but with absolutely beautifully furnished rooms, a fabulous swimming pool and a very pleasant restaurant, I found the experience overall to be very good. I had wanted to stay in one of Vicksburg's mansions when I planned my trip through the South, and Cedar Grove did the trick, complete with Civil War canon ball embedded in the wall. I really love this period of architecture, and appreciate that maintaining an historic building takes a life time of passion. I'm so pleased that Cedar Grove wasn't "restored to death", but still had a creaky (but elegant and beautiful) staircase and the odd crack or two. I could feel the age of the place, but also sense the lives of those who had lived there in the past as I walked through with the type written notes of the self-guided tour. The reception area did have a bit of a musty smell about it, I guess this happens in the humidity of the South, but the people working there were friendly, honest and nice to chat with. I enjoyed my stay at Cedar Grove Mansion Inn.

Room Tip: Take a room in the main house - next time I'd like to stay at the front with the balcony

I drove to Vicksburg and visited my daughter there where she and a friend were staying. She gave me the tour of the inn and grounds that she received. She enjoyed all aspects of her stay -- polite, helpful staff, historic atmosphere, generous and delicious complementary breakfast. I joined them for dinner at the restaurant and it was splendid - efficient, attentive wait staff, superb food and drinks, enjoyable atmosphere. The price is more than I normally spend for dining out, but definitely worth it for a special night out.
