Vicksburg Riverfront Murals

We've seen lots of murals in our travels, but these are definitely the best so far! Telling the story of Mississippi from earliest times, they are well-done and very detailed. The one depicting the origina of the Teddy Bear was my personal favorite, but they are ALL great! Free to the public and with a paved sidewalk in front. Across from these, there is a children's park with waterspouts and wooden climbing structures to let little ones work off energy. Nice little park too, with benches. Well worth a side trip to see if you're close.

There is a lot of beauty in these murals and a lot of work to make them so real. You can feel the cotton plantations slaves on one and all the different pictures make you feel in that part of history.

I didn't count how many murals were done, but each one had a bronze plaque in front of it with facts/history lesson on that particular mural. They were so huge and very well done and located along the Yazoo River front.

These murals are very beautiful but the rest of the riverfront/downtown area is a ghost town. The buildings downtown are in beautiful condition but sadly, many are vacant. Wanted to visit the Old Depot Museum, but got there at closing time. Sad to see such a nice area without much for tourists.

My recent trip along the delta served as indication to me of the community spirit of the men and women in this part of the USA in promoting their town to visitors who drop by.
The outstanding murals of Vicksburg depicting the history of the town are a work of art converting what would be a very ugly barrage are reported to have cost $17000 each and payed for by local business and community groups and present the history of the area .
There longevity is assured by a special plastic overfinish to guard against graffitti and weather.
Well worth the 30 minutes required to check them all out.
