Just seeing the construction of this ship is an education in itself. This is a must stop in the park even if you do not see anything else.

The Cairo Museum is simply stunning. You don't appreciate the size of the ironclads until you go on board the restored vessel. Be sure to go in to the museum itself to see the artifacts and the short film about the recovery and restoration efforts.

Assumed there was just going to be an exhibit about the USS Cairo. NOPE. Not only can you see the USS Cairo in all its glory (looking like some steampunk sci-fi/western military vehicle), you can actually walk through part of the boat! Was driving through and thought I'd check it out, so glad I did. The staff at the museum are very knowledgeable and gave great suggestions for things to see in the area.

The USS Cairo is the highlight of the Vicksburg battlefield tour for a couple of reasons. First of all, it illuminates the fighting on the Mississippi river during the Civil War, which I had never appreciated despite visits to many battlefields from that era. Second and more importantly, it allows you to walk on board an actual ironclad ship that was sunk during the war. This hands on experience is unforgettable. The accompanying museum offers good context, but does not pack as much impact as the ship itself. Take a few minutes to watch the video showing them raising the ship from the river bottom; it did not go smoothly! One last point: the ship is under cover so it's a great stop even in the pouring rain that we experienced

The U.S.S. Cairo is the only Civil War ironclad of its kind in existence. The attached little museum has artifacts recovered from the river along with the boat. This boat exhibit is unique in that they used the remains of the actual vessel and built around that to allow a representation of the complete vessel.

They are doing an excellent job of restoring this ship, It is the last one as others were sold for scrap years ago and this one was lifted out of the water and is being restored. There is a small museum and the ship is outside. And you can actually walk on to it and get a feel of it. my husband loved this.

This old iron clad union boat was recovered from the Mississippi River in the 60s. Neat museum attached and the cemetery next door is impressive. The Vicksburg civil was park is very impressive.

We really enjoyed this museum. Especially the boat itself! Great place to take the kids for an educational experience!

Didn't realize it was part of the Battlefield Park. Quite interesting and very well worth the time spent there. The Cairo (pronounced Karo) was one of 7 ironclad ships built, and this one sunk in the Yazoo River in the Civil War. Lots of artifacts from the ship. Just really interesting and a window to the time period.
