This is an organized, well put together museum with items on display that were found from the ship. You can walk onto the ship and learn more about it firsthand as well.

If you're a Civil War (or War for Souithern Independence as one of my professors referred to it), the USS Cairo Museum is a must-see. The Cairo itself, dredged up from years at the bottom of the Mississippi, and the tragic end for some incredibly intrepid Union sailors, is absolutely spell-binding. Inside the museum building, immediately next to the Cairo,I felt the pathos of the everyday items, buttons, artillery, razors, and the like of men on both sides, now long dead, but whose valor remains legendary. Both my grandfather and my great-grandfather were in the Alabama regular and. agreed not to again take up arms again and, immediately, once freed, did so. Both were wounded; both survived.

Was not expecting much out of the exhibit. But they rebuild the deck to where you can actually walk in the ship! It was great to stand in side and imagine the noise from the monsterous cannons that petrude from the walls. Definitely worth the visit.

We took the time to visit the USS Cairo Museum inside the Vicksburg Military Park. Many Civil War sites are fields were battles took place. This ship is an actual relic. Take the time to see how the ship was raised and the history of the ship. There are many personal items in the museum. We have a National Park Senior Pass so there was no entrance fee. The Park Pass was $10 for life and is worth checking out.

It's inside Vicksburg National Military Park, so you have to pay entrance ($8 a car) and then it takes a while to reach it.
