Owner description: 1800 acres of now peaceful countryside, this park was once the scene of a bloody 47-day Civil War battle.

The siege of Vicksburg was a decisive engagement in the Civil War. Vicksburg National Military Park, though itself very beautiful, helps bring alive the painful history of the time and the sacrifices made by many brave men and women. It's a must-see for any history lover. It's a must-see for any American.

The park is beautiful and there is plenty to look at if you like monuments but very few physical things to touch. The markings to show the norths lines and southern lines were fantastic. You could really see the closeness of the troops and some of the battles which really puts battles during this time in perspective. The USS Cairo was wonderful as well. It is worth taking the time to walk through the museum to see all that was recovered from the ship when it was raised. The way the park is arranged you go through the Union side first then you go through the Confederate side. This made it much easier to see the layout of the battles.

For the negative. There was way more writing to read than most people would take the time for. I saw many people start reading then stop because there was so much. There were many examples of types of artillery on display that could be touched, which was great. Many places just had signage about what happened at that location, some with drawings. We have been to several other Civil War parks and they offered more physical things to touch and walk through.

Some people may not appreciate the way the park presents history and children may have trouble with it as well. It is worth the money to go and see but be prepared to spend more than an hour or two as we spent 4 1/2 hours. The movie should be watched before you head out.

We went to the visitors center and gift shop first, which gave a good overview of the park. Took about 45 minutes in there. Then off to tour. When you actually go to the gate to enter, be sure to keep your receipt, you can get back in again free for 7 days with it and there is so much to see, you will be back again! We bought the CD at the visitors center and am glad we did, excellent tour info all the way through. Remember tho, the drive is not in order of events or battles or sides, so have a good idea of who was where and when the 2 battles occured before the siege. The road tour was excellent and we are history buffs and were well prepared. We spent almost 3 hours driving the first day and were less than half way through. Returned on day 2 and spent 3 more hours. OK, for 'normal' folks with kids, you can probably do an ok job of seeing what needs to be seen in 3 hours, but you will want more. Highlights include the Illinois monument (you must go in), the African-American monument, Grant's headquarters, the cemetery, and especially the USS Cairo (a museum to enter). One of the best national parks we have been to!

We have visited this park three times, and we love it. The park store has the usual things, and the movie should be updated, but overall adequately shares the history of the siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War. There are many monument and plenty of room to walk and drive your way through the park. I was disappointed that the park hours have been cut from closing the park at 7 pm to 5 pm due to the president's sequestration order. Take your camera. This national landmark in addition to the many other landmarks of history in Vicksburg should satisfy the most ardent history lover!

Got an early start, and made it for the first showing (8:05) of the visitor center film. It was excellent - really put the entire area into perspective for our whole group. Purchased the audio CD, which I probably would bypass, in retrospect. Not sure it's worth the $12. I'd probably opt for the "phone" tour instead. We excitedly started our journey.

LOTS to see, LOTS of places to stop. The signage marking the UnIon and Confederate lines was easy to understand for my 8-year-old -- that aspect really resonated with him. Beautiful park, with green hilly areas - take care to watch for the many, many fitness buffs on the road - yes, even in humid late July!!!

I was careful to read up on the park "wildlife" - ants, poisonous snakes, potential beehives in cannons, etc. Yet (of course) my 10-year-old emerged from the car only to have both feet COVERED in ants. Needless to say, this was upsetting to her, and extremely painful. I called the ranger to ask for advice when puffy spots started popping up on her feet, abdomen, and armpits, and they were quite responsive and helpful.

She was able to rally around the point of the Cairo exhibit, and we really did enjoy the time. I was surprised how this experience resonated for them. In addition, the rangers assisting with the junior ranger guides were outstanding!!!

By the way, this park held my children's attention for 5 1/2 hours!! Now THAT'S remarkable!!!
