I was disappointed. I visited on a very cold day where one was reluctant to leave the vehicle. This is a very important piece of heritage and I found the exhibits too far away to read from the car. The exhibits were disjointed in that the various plaques were of material that looked out of place with the setting and the environment. This disconnect then followed through to the exhibits where rather than tell a story they were just a collection of facts and numbers. I just felt that this did not tell the story of the ordinary soldier from either side and why they were there or why they felt that the needed to be there.

This is the place to visit if you are in Vicksburg, MS. Especially if you are interested in the Civil War. The Cairo was the highlight of my visit to the military park. Also the trip around the grounds. This park brought history to life for me.

We found the visit very moving. There is a 20 minute film to watch before you start the drive. The self guide drive is great - plenty of places to turn in and explore more.
Disappointed with the graves - the upkeep is poor compared to the British war commission ones you see in France etc.

We visited on a rainy day but that didn't dampen our visit. This military park is pristine and full of real history. The monuments are too numerous to mention but it was the vast expanse of graves that evoked the most poignancy. They go on and on and really bring the real meaning of what went on during this battle.

We drove slowly through the grounds of this military park, trying to study as many of the monuments as we could in our travels. It was absolutely amazing. I am thankful that these grounds are preserved and dedicated in memory of those who died for the causes they believed in. Would definitely go back.

The battleground restorations and monuments were superb. Would recommend everyone to try and visit this National Park. The roads have to be marked with directions due to the closures from rain damage. The map and explanation sheet about the closure was not sufficient.

I think it should be a requirement to be a US Citizen. To understand the sacrifices made by those that went before us.

A review of this Historic Museum showcases one of the most important battles of the War between the States....and directly addresses the multiple attempts by Gen US Grant to 'take' Vicksburg (a VERY strategic location)... The eventual 'fall' of Vicksburg to the Union Forces, directly led to the end of the War and the Union Victory. Several monuments were constructed to memorize many of those (gallant) fighters and can be easily seen as one drives through the Museum area...

It is hard to believe that men would charge up one of those hills when you were being shot at. As you travel around the park you can see the markers where each line setup. The park is a just a small area of the battle ground. You can see these markers around the rest of town.

I have visited most of the major civil war battlefields but had never had the chance to vsit the Gibraltar of the West until now. It really helps to understand the battle and why Grant and Sherman failed to take it in direct attacks when you drivev and walk the actual terrain. The visitor center was smaller than i expected for such an important site but was very well presented. For one thing, history books don't really explain why there weren't very many civilian casulaties during the seige. It was because the people dug out caves and sheltered in them for the duration. The old gunbaot and msueum were intresting but then the road was closed and you had to drive back into town. I wanted to re enter the battle field drive but it took al long time to find my way through town and back to the visitor center. At that pon it we decided to just head on to our destiantion for the evening.
