The park is a 17 mile driving tour of the battlefield. There are numerous monuments and markers depicting the battle lines, trenches and regimental encampments.
We have been to most of the major Civil War Parks but this one ranks as one of the best. From the time we got to the visitor's center to the time we finished - we had spent 5 hours in the park! The visitor's center has a great movie and a very good small electric map and both give you a good idea of what occured and what you will see. We opted to use our cell phone and it was a very good decision as it was easy to operate at the 15 designated locations. Now we obviously made a lot of stops and took a bunch of short walks to get a real feel for the whole engagement. We had nothing else planned for the day so we took our time and had a very enjoyable experience. The park itself is very well laid out and very well organized and the blue signs for the north and red for the south enabled us to get a very good feel to the entire campaign.
I highly recommend having a guided tour through the park. The guide is very knowledge and drives the car so you can focus on the scenery and monuments. My sister and I also had the opportunity to run through the park as well. Very beautiful and peaceful.
We enjoyed our visit to the park. The movie was very informative and gives a great overview of the battle. The drive through the park provides a feel for what it would have been like during that time. Lots of monuments throughout. Some very simply while others very elaborate.
Our favourite thing was the tour of the Cairo and the museum with various artifacts from the ship that had been recovered.
