We bought a CD to play in the car while we went through. Later, we found out that there are registered park guides who can give tours for $25. That would be well worth it.

We spent two days touring the park. It is very well kept. It is easy to drive or walk.

“Very well done”
Reviewed April 7, 2012

I liked the layout and the vastness of this battlefield. We got a little confused and missed the turn for the Illinois monument, so we had to go around again. It's a good thing, though, it's mostly one way. I guess if you have the auto-tour you wouldn't make that mistake. The movie at the welcome center was very good, and did a great job of setting the scene. Once again our national parks have done an outstanding job!

“Interesting, albeit very focused park”
Reviewed April 6, 2012

I'm sure if you're a civil war buff, this place is great, but if you are European, or just don't know too much about the American Civil War, Plaques all over detail how many people were wounded/killed/missing in what regiments, and all the states have put up what feels like too many memorial stones all over the place. It's sort of overwhelming, and does take away from the feeling of loss in the place, rather than add to it. Information-wise, the park fails to give the broad strokes/story of the war, and almost only focuses on the events at Vicksburg itself. While interesting, I was hoping for a more thorough "walkthrough" of the civil war. The highlight of the park is the USS Cairo, an ironclad reconstructed from the original vessel. The area and museum around it are great! Definitely got our money's worth in the park, as it's quite cheap (8 dollars), but it wasn't as interesting as I'd expected all in all.
