Lotus Honolulu at Diamond Head
Ranked #5 of 84 Hotels in Honolulu
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 10, 2012

We stayed at the Lotus for a week in January. We had an ocean view premium room on the 12th floor. The room was clean and spacious. The view was great – unobstructed view of Diamond Head with partial view of the ocean from the front balcony. The “25” series premium rooms also have a side standing balcony with partial ocean view on higher floors (we saw a whale from our room).
The room has a small fridge for beverages and snacks but no coffee maker. We requested a coffee maker but after it had not arrived by the second day after our request, we cancelled the request and used the lobby coffee service.
The web page advertises single king or two double beds. However the reservation process doesn’t allow for specifying a bed configuration request. We called after making the reservation on the web and asked for two doubles. We were told that requests cannot be guaranteed but they would note the request. Upon check-in, we did not get two doubles and they wouldn’t be available for a least a couple days, so we stayed with the king.
We think that because the hotel is relatively small, and usually filled, that it is difficult for the staff to guarantee specific requests. However the rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable; and upper floor rooms have great views.
The beach chairs, towels, and mats are a great service as is the afternoon wine service. The laundry facility on the 3rd floor is also helpful.
There are many food options in this area on Kapahulu: Tokkuri Tei, Ono Hawaiian, Side Street Inn, Leonards. Also Diamond Head Market & Grill is a really enjoyable walk in the morning across Kapiolani Park (for scones); pick up salads or wraps to keep in the fridge for later in the day. There is also a Safeway on Kapahulu and a convenience store next door at New Otani.
Like so many people mention, it is a great location nestled alongside Kapiolani Park.
We would definitely stay here again.

Aloha,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review for the Aqua Lotus Honolulu. We are very pleased to know that you had pleasant stay... and that you saw a whale from your room! You have made the correct assumption with regard to the hotel trying to honor requests, at times higher occupancy may prevent the guest services team from delivering on all guest requests at the time of arrival. From your comments it is also apparent that you made the most of the area, having explored many of the great food options in the Diamond Head and Kapahulu area's. The Lotus location on the Gold Coast is not for everyone but the savvy traveler to Honolulu knows how great it is to be just on the edge of Waikiki - a place where they can enjoy the best of both worlds!

We look forward to having you as our guest again... and having another chance to meet your bedding requests!

Mahalo,

We really enjoyed the Lotus. They had free bike rental, afternoon wine service a the best most amazing staff. We stayed there for three days and I didn't want I leave. The rooms were clean an comfortable and the price was awesome for a dual view room! Thank you to the wonderful staff! They all made us feel very welcome!!!

We stayed here for 5.5 nights in March 2012. (Checked out at 830pm on last night and paid full price in order to catch red-eye flight.) Our corner room had an ocean view plus Diamond Head view. Please note that the hotel is set back from the ocean a bit, so it is not possible to have a 100% view of the ocean. We enjoyed being able to see the waves break on the ocean and thunderstorms.
The room was very clean, pristine, and nicely decorated. The hotel's website says wi-fi is free, yet there was a card in the room stating they charged; we phoned the front desk who then clarified that wi-fi is free. (I would recommend the hotel remove these cards.)
The employees were very cheerful, polite, and friendly. We enjoyed them!
There are beach towels, mats, chairs, and bicycles to check out at no additional charge. We took advantage of the towels and bikes.
There is an approximate 0.5 mile walk to the bustling Waikiki strip. The walk goes through a nice park.
The on-site hotel was closed for renovations, so we ate breakfast at an adjacent hotel our first full day there. I would recommend walking into Waikiki for breakfast for more and cheaper options.
We did not take advantage of the nightly wine hour or Wii in the lobby.
Since this is a boutique hotel, I do not think Aqua Lotus is a full-service hotel, but the staff was great.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up to take advantage of the views.

This is my second trip to the waikiki beach area of Oahu . We stayed at a great hotel last time but I wanted something less noisy this time. When I read the reviews and description of aqua lotus, I booked the hotel although I was a little nervous about how far it really was from the main strip of stores and restaurants.
From the moment we walked in to the sweet smelling lobby and were greeted by staff who were there to help us to our room, it was a great choice. A mistake in the number of beds that could have turned the trip negatively , was fixed quickly. A coffeemaker with hawaiian coffee and a microwave was brought to our room ; fridge provided too. The view from our balcony(1022) was amazing with diamond head to the left and the pacific ocean to the right. I was in heaven! The bed was comfy and I have a terrible back problem. The beach behind the hotel was terrific with the water crystal clear and while a little cool ... it was February after all ... we still enjoyed the water and sun. Oh yeah, the hotel really does lend chairs, umbrellas and towels. And you can also borrow a bike to take a ride around the surrounding park and mountain area. My husband even ran into them taping an episode of Hawaii 5-0 at the nearby park on a bike ride! The only drawback is the 15 to 20 minute walk for food and shopping - however it is a lovely stroll by the beach and park; great for working off calories from the variety of restaurants on the strip. Lu Lu's was one of our favorites.
Service was amazing from information about the Bus, welcoming us back (shout out to Bill), help with luggage including storage while we awaited our plane, bed turndowns, the coffee and wine hours, etc.
To sum it up .. if you are looking for a smaller hotel with awesome service, great views, breathtaking sunset and rises, and a vacation your friends will be envious of, book the Aqua Lotus.

I had a great stay at the Aqua Lotus! The staff went out of their way to make sure that my stay was a great one, and overall thought that this little hotel was wonderful. While you are a 10 minute walk from the Waikiki strip, this was actually a good thing for me!

Pros:
This is a very nice location off from the noise and bustle of Waikiki, we stayed previously at the New Otani hotel nextdoor, where the hotel is actually on the water.
This hotel is not near the water, but the views of the Diamond Head are nice and we probably should not have chosen the more expensive `ocean view' rooms and just taken the Diamond Head view as many reviewers suggest.
The beds and bathroom are very nice, and access to the beach are easy.
The restuarant in the New Otani next door has a very nice view on the beach and has classical food well done (shrimp salad, salad Nicoise)..
Cons:
The hotel does not have a real place to hang out as the restaurant is closed, here is no bar and the lobby is really a basement. However, the staff were helpful and the rooms are larger and in better condition than the New Otani. We were on the 9th floor and we overlooked the parking lot, with the ocean in the distant.
The room does not come with a kettle or coffee maker but the staff helped us by providing a kettle for making tea. The little convenience store next door has cereal/coffee and all other sundries.

Room Tip: Diamond Head view, higher floors...

I extended my stay in Waikiki and moved to the Aqua Hotel for 5 days. It was much more quiet than Waikiki and It had the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The room is huge and a super large sliding door opens to the large deck. I was on the 9th floor with a great view of Diamond Head. If you are a member of the Elks Club, it is onlt 2 buildings away and you can use their parking during the day and their pool. Unfortunatelly the hotel does not have a pool, but the beach is just steps away. The only drawback I saw was its old TV and niot many channels, Ask for a coffee pot in the room.

Room Tip: Ask fior top floors. There are 12.
