“Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

Overall, this hotel is a wonderful place to stay. There were a few small quirks, but nothing that outweighed a wonderful stay at this location.

PROS:

- Big, comfortable beds. I had a very restful night's sleep each night. Thank you!
- Very clean.
- The shower was warm and inviting. I love the remodeled bathrooms!
- Stunning views of both the mountains and the ocean (depending on the room you get to stay in).
- I love that you can step outside of your room and enjoy the weather outdoors. Wonderful.
- Friendly staff that communicated with me before my arrival. I was impressed by this.
- I hate a late flight, and I was accommodated -- another impressive surprise.
- The ability to get $10 credits per night for use during dinner in the restaurant downstairs if you decline housekeeping services each day. Nice.
- Right across the street from the beach. You simply cross over the street and the beach is on the other side of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It's a perfect location. Many of these reviews say that it is far away from the beach. This is simply not true. It's a safe five minute walk. I walked late at night all the time while I was here and never, ever felt unsafe. There are people everywhere at night, and they are almost all tourists.
- The location is wonderful. It was in a perfect spot for me.
- Bell and valet staff were super-friendly.

CONS:

- The charge for parking was ridiculous at $30 per night (when you figure in tip, you're looking at $32 per day for this valet-only feature of the hotel). My car rental, including taxes, was only $37 per night. When the parking is as much as your rental, you know there's a problem. Yes, I understand that many of the other properties in Waikiki charge around the same amount for parking, but just because you CAN charge for something doesn't mean you should.
- As a previous reviewer noted, you will here sirens throughout the night. It didn't bother me in the slightest, but if sirens bother you, look elsewhere.
- The free breakfast for HHonors Gold and Diamond members is pretty bad. Dry cereal, yogurt, and some bread/pastry items are pretty much all that are available. If you want a hot meal, you have to pay to "upgrade" to it. This seems pretty silly when there are two restaurants on either side of the hotel that you can pay less than the "upgrade" for and get a much bigger meal. They should rethink this breakfast strategy, especially for their Gold and Diamond members. Why? They aren't making much money off of it (even for the upgrade), and if so many reviews are speaking negatively of it, then it's not really worth continuing (just my thought). I had a free breakfast for four mornings because of my HHonors status, and I only took advantage of it twice.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

This is a solid Doubletree location, and I had an outstanding time on Oahu. I will return to this hotel the next time I stay in Waikiki. Thank you to the staff for your consideration and your helpful attitude.

Aloha rikerwt,

Mahalo (thank you) for your extremely detailed review! WOW. We appreciate the time you took to give an honest account of your experience. We are always ecstatic to see comments on the service of our team and cleanliness of our rooms. Our renovations are definitely gorgeous, but it really is our team members that make all the difference.

The walk to the beach is definitely a lot closer than it may seem. Hawaii blocks are a lot smaller than "big city" blocks...perhaps it is just that we all walk slower in Hawaii! We are glad that you noticed our close proximity to the beach and observed that our location is safe and very active.

We also very much appreciate your feedback on how we can improve. We strive to offer rates better than other comparable hotels as well as provide a breakfast that balances quality with fair pricing.

Thank you again for your review and we hope to welcome you back soon!

Warmest Regards,
Sandy Narvaez

Its a average hotel with very compact/small rooms. Moreover we can easily listen what the neighbours at next door talking about. The bathrooms are very small too. No bath tub in bathroom. Initially we got only one set of towels. I had to call the house keeping at 5 am in the morning to get another set for my wife. The reason they gave was that they only had one guest name in their records which is why they put one towel.

Aloha Amit B,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at the Doubletree by Hilton Alana Waikiki. Your high rankings for our location, sleep quality and cleanliness are greatly appreciated and will be shared with our team.

In the future, we will be sure to double check on the correct number of guests we have staying with us in each room so we have to correct number of towels.

Totally a valuable hotel for business, you can see the sea from the terrace, but not relate to the beach, if you want to have a leisure, it is not very convenient. 40 min to the airport, bathroom is a little small, I will touch the door when bathing. Types of food for breakfast is idential American, a bit less to choose.

Aloha Lei C,

Thank you for staying with us and sharing your experience. We truly appreciate your feedback! As you mentioned, our location allows for partial views of the ocean and is located in the area of Waikiki closest to the Honolulu International Airport. Our island is little, but we have big city traffic...and our guests enjoy our location as we have multiple options for entering and exiting Waikiki. I do hope you were able to explore the island during your visit!

Again, we very much appreciate your review. We hope to welcome you back soon!

Stayed here for work, good location while still being a a Hilton property. Not far from the beach, nice wal to the mall and convience store virtually next door for all those things at a lower cost. Parking cost is ridiculous, cheaper to park in Boston!

Staff is friendly and accommodating, nice sitting area for people watching too.

Aloha Doc E,

Thank you for your review and choosing to stay with us! Your review was right on point...we are essentially the meeting point of Waikiki and downtown Honolulu (shopping mall). There are numerous shopping and dining options in the area that gives our area a variety of options and excitement.

We love our island home...though it definitely restricts our land availability! Property space is at a premium and scarce. We strive to provide the best value as we compare ourselves to comparable properties.

You are very much appreciated - thank you so much for your high rankings of our value, location, rooms and service. We strive provide you with a rewarding experience every time you visit us and we hope to welcome you back soon.

Decent service and good quality, great location. Staff was friendly and courteous. Not much help from Desk staff for facilitating sightseeing tours to see local attractions. Location is prime and overall experience is good.

Excellent hotel for the price and a 5 minute walk to the Hilton Hawaiian Village and beach. Only problem is that they are located between Waikiki and the Fire Department. As with any big, city vacation spot...the fire department runs all night long. I'm sure it affects everyone, not only the DoubleTree. Consider this...FD will be there within 5 minutes if you need them. Still worth staying here.

Aloha Coleman K,

Thank you so much for your review! We are so happy that you found your experience to be "excellent" and gave high rankings for our rooms and service. It is always heart-warming to see our genuine desire to serve is noticed by you!

I'm so sorry to hear that the passing sirens disrupted your perfect stay. The fire department is actually located on the other side of Waikiki, but I do think they use a route close to our property as we are located in the best section to get in and out of Waikiki quickly.

We hope to see you again soon and thank you again for your review.

THANK YOU, Doubletree, for having queen-sized beds, a rarity in Waikiki from what I can gather. I could only find full-sized beds---uncomfortable, imho, for 2 adults and 2 grown children or any family of 4. We all slept well! We gladly sacrificed a hotel on the beach for bigger beds.
First came the warm chocolate chip cookies when we checked-in. I wanted to secretly tag along behind the next set of guests who were checking in so I could get more... Excellent staff---from the parking valet (extremely prompt---never waited more than a minute or two for him to get our car) to the front desk staff who helped me when I was locked out. Accommodating and helpful. Comfortable mattresses, good sized bathroom, nice balcony for two, quick elevators, great little workout room, and it was quiet in our hall! My only complaint would be that the wi-fi wasn't free :(
